1940 – The Pirates beat the Boston Bees 14-2 in the first night game at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field.

1974 – On 10-cent beer night at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium, with the score tied 5-5 and the winning run at third base for the Indians, hundreds of fans jump the right-field fence and attack Texas Rangers outfielder Jeff Burroughs and other players. Chief umpire Nestor Chylak, who is struck on the head, declares the game a forfeit win for Texas. Six fans are arrested.

1975 – Curt Carpenter pitches a three-hit shutout and strikes out eight as California defeats Canevin 2-0 in the WPIAL baseball semifinals. Mark Johnson goes 3-for-3 and drives in both runs.

1980 – Mike Long has a game-tying hit in the seventh inning and the game-winner in the ninth as Carmichaels High School beats Neshannock, 8-5, in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals. Bob Phillips pitches a complete-game five-hitter to improve his record to 10-0.

1984 – Bob Berry, former coach of Montreal and Los Angeles, is hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, replacing Lou Angotti.

1985 – Chartiers-Houston scores six runs with two outs in the fifth inning and defeats Blacklick Valley 7-2 in the PIAA Class AA softball playoffs at Ligonier.

1987 – Danny Harris defeats Edwin Moses with a 47.56 mark in the 400-meter hurdles at a meet in Madrid, ending the longest winning streak in track and field history. Moses, who finishes 0.13 seconds behind Harris, had won 122 consecutive races dating to Aug. 26, 1977.

1988 – North Carolina’s Sherrie MacKinney, a Trinity graduate, finishes fifth in the javelin at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. MacKinney’s best throw is 172-10.

1993 – The Pittsburgh Steelers waive quarterback Bubby Brister, who started 57 games over the last seven seasons.

1996 – The Pittsburgh Pirates select right-handed pitcher Kris Benson of Clemson University with the first pick in baseball’s amateur draft.

2009 – Ashley Morran’s two-strike, two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scores Shannon Falleroni and Kilee Bonazza as Trinity rallies for a 7-6 victory over District 10 champion Corry in the PIAA Class AAA softball quarterfinals at Slippery Rock University.

2009 – California University hires Mark Swasey as its head women’s basketball coach. Swasey was at Franklin Pierce for the seven years. He replaces Heather Kearney, who left the Vulcans after one season as head coach.

2002 – The Pittsburgh Pirates select Ball State right-handed pitcher Bryan Bullington with the first pick in baseball’s annual amateur draft.
