1944 – Joe Nuxhall, at 15 years, 10 months, 11 days, becomes the youngest player in major league history when he pitches two-thirds of an inning for the Cincinnati Reds in an 18-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
1951 – Glenn Reese resigns after two years as athletics coach at Hickory High School.
1977 – Al Geiberger, a 39-year old veteran, shoots 13-under par 59 to break the PGA Tour record for 18 holes in the second round of the Danny Thomas Memphis Golf Classic.
2011 – Dana Holgorsen is promoted to head coach of West Virginia’s football program, hours after Bill Stewart resigned. Holgorsen was hired as the Mountaineers’ offensive coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting six months earlier.
