1964 – The Meadows draws a record crowd of 9,462, including golf legend Arnold Palmer, for opening night in its second year. The total purse for the nine-race card is $29,375.
1968 – Jeff Cree pitches a two-hit shutout as Waynesburg defeats Kiski, 3-0, at Forbes Field to advance to the WPIAL baseball championship game against Ellwood City.
1970 – Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches a 2-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the host San Diego Padres. Ellis walks eight and hits a batter, and Willie Stargell hit two homers.
1980 – Mike Easler hits for the cycle – he homers off Doug Bair in his final at-bat – and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-6, at Riverfront Stadium.
1990 – Bob Johnson is hired as head coach and Scotty Bowman is named director of development and recruitment by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
1995 – Ron Faust, head basketball coach at Washington High School, is hired as the Prexies’ athletic director, replacing Bob Wagner, who retired after 27 years as the school’s athletic director.
2009 – Pittsburgh’s Max Talbot scores two second-period goals as the Penguins beat the defending champion Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 7 and win the Stanley Cup at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena. Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, the playoff scoring leader with 36 points, earns the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP.

1972 – The American Basketball Association purchases the Pittsburgh Condors and disbands the franchise.
1975 – The Pittsburgh Penguins declare bankruptcy after eight seasons. The doors of the Civic Arena are padlocked by the IRS.
1979 – The National Basketball Association’s general managers and coaches vote to adopt the 3-point field goal for the 1979-80 season.
1987 – The Pittsburgh Penguins select Seattle defenseman Chris Joseph with the fifth pick of the NHL Entry Draft.
2008 – Canon-McMillan scores seven runs in the first two innings and cruises to a 10-2 victory over Spring-Ford to win the PIAA Class AAAA baseball championship at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona. The Big Macs score 40 runs in winning four state playoff games.
2008 – Matt Spiegel throws a two-hit shutout as Camp Hill defeats Carmichaels 2-0 in the PIAA Class A baseball championship game.
2011 – Peters Township High School hires Brian Geyer as its athletic director. Geyer had been AD at Seton LaSalle.
