June 19

1975 – After only one season at the University of Pittsburgh, basketball player Melvin Bennett signs with the Virginia Squires of the ABA. Bennett averaged 10.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game as a freshman at Pitt.

1985 – Waynesburg High School hires 24-year-old Jeff Metheny, a former quarterback at Glenville State College, as its head football coach. Metheny replaces Joe Zorosky, who resigned as the Raiders’ coach after one season.

1987 – The Pittsburgh Gladiators defeat the Washington Commandos, 48-46, before 12,117 at the Civic Arena in the first game in the history of the Arena Football League. Pittsburgh quarterback Mike Hohensee passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns.

1988 – Belle Vernon infielder Brad Bowden, who batted .518, is named the Observer-Reporter Baseball Player of the Year.

1989 – Chartiers-Houston hires Phil Mary as its head wrestling coach.

1966 – John Bushofsky resigns as head football coach at Chartiers-Houston High School and is replaced by Don Clendaniel.

1980 – Roberto Duran wins a 15-round decision over Sugar Ray Leonard in Montreal to win the world welterweight crown. Despite entering with a 71-1 record, Duran is given only one-fifth of the purse to fight Leonard.

1983 – Larry Nelson shoots 4-under-par 67 – which includes a spectacular 62-foot putt to take the lead – for the rain-delayed final 18 holes and wins the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Nelson finishes one stroke ahead of Tom Watson.

1991 – Bill Loar, assistant girls basketball coach at Trinity High School, is named the Hillers’ head coach. Loar takes over after Dave Johns resigned after 16 seasons.

1994 – Ernie Els of South Africa becomes the first foreign winner of the U.S. Open since 1981, beating Loren Roberts on the 20th hole of a playoff at Oakmont Country Club.

2012 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin becomes only the ninth NHL player to win the Arty Ross Trophy (leading scorer), Hart Memorial Trophy (league MVP) and Ted Lindsay Award (NHLPA’s most outstanding player) in the same season.

2015 – Max Scherzer pitches a no-hitter, losing his perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning when he hit a batter in the Washington Nationals’ 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
