1965 – Pittsburgh’s Willie Stargell hits three home runs and misses a fourth by a foot, settling for a double, as the Pirates defeat Los Angeles 13-3 at Dodger Stadium.
1974 – After an 11-year coaching hiatus, Bill Black is hired as wrestling coach at Avella High School.
1982 – Ed Bozik is hired as Pitt’s athletic director replacing Cas Myslinski, who retired after 13 1/2 years.
1996 – McGuffey High School hires Ed Goetz as its boys basketball coach. Goetz guided Sto-Rox to a WPIAL championship and has a 96-31 career record.
1998 – Bobby MacWhinnie scores on a par on the first extra hole to defeat Scott McCloy and Jon McGovern in a playoff to win the Southpointe Junior Invitational golf tournament.
1999 – The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Jaormir Jagr wins the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player after finishing the season with 44 goals and 83 assists to lead all scorers for the second consecutive year.
