1943 – Claysville outscores Clark 12-2 in the fourth quarter to win a WPIAL Class B basketball playoff game, 32-31. Claysville, the Section 20 champion, gets the game-winning basket from Tommy Buchanon, who scores 10 points.
1959 – Meade McKee scores 22 points and McDonald outlasts Sharpsburg 47-45 in overtime in the WPIAL Class B basketball semifinals at McKeesport.
1961 – Champions Jerry Lattimore (95 pounds), Jerry Grimm (103), Ricky Kelvington (112), Tom Snee (120) and Duane Snee (127) lead Trinity at the Section 3 wrestling tournament at Chartiers-Houston High School. Trinity wins the team title.
1963 – Bentleyville-Ellsworth boosts its record to 20-1 and advances to the WPIAL Class B semifinals with a 60-51 victory over Perryopolis. The Bearcats, who won their 17th straight game, are led by Ed Perri’s 16 points.
1968 – Undefeated Donora (21-0) gets 28 points from Malcolm Lomax and 16 from Ken Griffey to defeat Penn Hills 76-64 in the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals before a crowd of 10,800 at the Civic Arena.
1970 – California State, playing its fourth game in five nights, upsets second-ranked Cheyney 110-91 at Hamer Hall to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference basketball championship. Bernie Floriani scores 29 points and grabs 19 rebounds to pace the Vulcans, who take control with a 14-0 run early in the second half.
1972 – Mike Brown leads a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and Washington pulls away in the fourth quarter to defeat Burgettstown 50-40 at the Pitt Field House and advance to the WPIAL Class B semifinals
1981 – Sophomore Tim Tyler makes a 12-foot jumper with four seconds remaining to give Waynesburg College a 47-45 victory over Saint Vincent in the NAIA District 18 basketball championship game before a capacity crowd at College Gym. The win advances Waynesburg (23-5) to the national tournament in Kansas City for the first time under head coach Rudy Marisa.
1987 – Waynesburg College wins its 35th consecutive home game, defeating Westminster, 71-63, in the NAIA District 18 championship game. Theron Hogue leads the Yellow Jackets with 24 points.
1991 – The Pittsburgh Penguins and Hartford Whalers make a six-player trade. The Penguins acquire center Ron Francis and defensemen Ulf Samuelsson and Grant Jennings in exchange for center John Cullen, winger Jeff Parker and defenseman Zarley Zalapski.
1990 – Hank Gathers, the West Coast Conference’s all-time scoring leader, dies after collapsing on the court during Loyola-Marymount’s conference tournament game against Portland.
1992 – Shawana Russell’s layup with three seconds left gives Washington a 66-65 victory over Beaver Falls in the WPIAL Class AA girls basketball semifinals at Keystone Oaks. Natalie Kubala scores 30 points and grabs 11 rebounds for the Prexies.
2000 – Six wrestlers from six different schools in Washington and Greene counties — West Greene’s John Vitolo (112), Beth-Center’s Ulysses Davis (130), Avella’s Don Rush Jr. (135), Washington’s Garrett Rossero (140), Chartiers-Houston’s Keith Straight (152) and Bentworth’s Cliff Wonsettler (171) — win individual titles at the Class AA Southwest Regional in Johnstown.
2010 – Ashton Gibbs makes a three-pointer several steps inside the midcourt line, just ahead of the final buzzer, giving Pitt a 73-71 win over Providence.
