Wild Things bring back Davis
The Washington Wild Things added to their roster for the 2021 Frontier League season by re-signing infielder J.R. Davis. Davis was with the Wild Things in the late stages of the 2019 season.
In 36 games with Washington, Davis batted .273 with 41 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases. He drove in 19 runs and had two walk-off hits, including a three-run homer to beat Joliet.
The former Oklahoma State player was a 15th round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.
“We saw flashes of JR’s impact ability back in 2019,” said Wild Things president and general manager Tony Buccilli. “He is an offensive-minded infielder with an aggressive approach and a comfort using the whole field. Adding another experienced bat will provide us the lineup depth we strive for.”
WVU players to transfer
West Virginia men’s basketball forward Emmitt Matthews is planning to transfer.
The junior announced his decision Thursday on Twitter.
Matthews joins guard Jordan McCabe, who announced earlier this week that he was entering the transfer portal. In addition, junior guard Sean McNeil said earlier that he was planning to enter the NBA Draft but leave open the possibility of returning to school.
Matthews, a three-year starter, was fifth on the team in points this season at 7.7 per game.
- West Virginia football safety Tykee Smith is entering the transfer portal.
Smith was an Associated Press third team all-American as a sophomore last season, when he was fourth on the Mountaineers with 61 tackles.
Smith’s decision came two months after West Virginia defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae left for the same position at Georgia.
In the NHL
Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice, Alex Ovechkin kept his hot streak going with the 721st goal of his NHL career and the Washington Capitals brushed off some rust to beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 Thursday night for their eighth victory in nine games.
Mika Zibanejad had three goals and three assists, Adam Fox had five assists and the New York Rangers routed the Philadelphia Flyers, 8-3.
