High school baseball
Playoff-bound Jefferson-Morgan defeated Monessen 18-3 in a four-inning game Thursday in Class A Section 2 for the 375th career win for Rockets head coach John Curtis.
Bryce Bedilion and Ayden Pratt each had three RBI for the Rockets (8-2, 11-5). Bedilion had a double, as did winning pitcher Kyle Clayton.
n Chartiers-Houston scored in every inning except one and prepared for the upcoming WPIAL Class 2A playoffs by defeating host Frazier 9-2 in a non-section game.
Ryan Parise had three singles and drove in two runs, winning pitcher Jake Mele drove in a pair and stole two bases, and Jimmy Sadler had a double, triple and scored twice. Chase Bitz chipped in with a double as C-H (14-3) won its sixth in a row.
n Bentworth’s late-season surge that netted the Bearcats a playoff berth in Class 2A continued with a 5-2 win over visiting West Greene in a non-section game.
The Bearcats broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run fifth inning. Owen Petrisek, who finished with three RBI, had a two-run single in the inning. Winning pitcher Landon Urcho struck out six and Seth Adams hit a triple for Bentworth (7-11).
Losing pitcher Caleb Rice tripled and Hunter Hamilton doubled for the Pioneers.
n Brody Evans went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three extra-base hits, powering Mapletown to a 16-1 win in four innings over Hundred (W.Va.).
Evans had two triples and one double to lead an 18-hit attack for Mapletown (3-9). Lance Stevenson was 3-for-3 with a triple and double, and winning pitcher Landan Stevenson and Cohen Stout each had a double. Landon Stevenson struck out nine in a three-hitter.
n Ringgold ended its Class 4A Section 3 season with an 8-1 loss to Uniontown as the teams split their two-game series. Ringgold (4-8, 8-10) was held four hits and its lone run was scored in the bottom of the seventh and an RBI single by Joey Shumaker.
n McGuffey had no trouble defeating Carrick from the Pittsburgh City League as the Highlanders rolled to a 12-2 win in five innings.
Luke Wagner doubled and drove in three run and Austin Beattie was 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI to lead the McGuffey attack. Winning pitcher Jansen Durbin fired a four-hitter and struck out seven.
n Lincoln Pack had a double and triple, Tyler Switalski was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs, Logan Higgins was 4-for-5 with three RBI and Waynesburg cruised to a 14-2 win at Beth-Center in a non-section play.
The Raiders took control from the start, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Winning pitcher Hudson Boris and two relievers combined to strike out 10.
High school softball
Peters Township scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and defeat host Pine-Richland 7-3 in a non-section game.
Katelyn Stokan hit a home run in the Indians’ big seventh inning. Skylar Lemansky was a force for PT the entire game, going 4-for-4 with two doubles to back the winning pitching of Mia Falbo.
n Kiley Meek hit a home run and struck out a career-high 11 in West Greene’s 9-1 win at Bentworth in a non-section game.
Meek was 3-for-4 with four RBI, Jersey Wise scored four runs and Katie Lampe went 3-for-4 with three runs.
n Hannah Wood had a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the seventh inning and Kendall Lemley followed with a two-run homer as Waynesburg rallied for an 8-5 win at Keystone Oaks in a non-section game.
Waynesburg trailed 5-4 before getting the tying run in the sixth, which set up the big finish.
Wood ended the day with three singles and three RBI. Lemley was the winning pitcher.
