1935 – Boston’s Babe Ruth hits three home runs – the last of his career – but Pittsburgh’s Tommy Thevenow drives in five runs as the Pirates defeat the Braves 11-7 at Forbes Field.
1954 – John Zanot’s single drives in Tom King with the tiebreaking run in the fifth inning, and Dave Palmer pitches a four-hitter, as Bethlehem Joint defeats Cumberland Township 4-3 in the WPIAL baseball playoffs at Charleroi.
1957 – Chuck Smith of Washington wins the PIAA high jump championship at the state meet in University Park.
1968 – Beth-Center junior Walter White is the only Washington County athlete to win a gold medal at the PIAA Track & Field Championships. White wins the Class B pole vault by clearing 13 feet.
1980 – Trinity’s Elaine Sobansky wins her third straight PIAA Class AAA girls shot put championship with a record throw of 50-1/2.
1986 – Washington’s Laila Brock wins four gold medals – three in individual events – at the PIAA Class AA Track & Field Championships in Shippensburg. Brock wins the girls 100 (12.63), 200 (25.31) and 400 (55.76) dashes and is a member of the Prexies’ winning 400 relay team.
1991 – The Stanley Cup belongs to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time following an 8-0 victory over the host Minnesota North Stars in Game 6 of the finals. Mario Lemieux is the Conn Smythe winner as Most Valuable Player in the playoffs. Lemieux scores a short-handed goal in the first period to make the score 2-0.
2002 – Peters Township High School senior Jessica Perry wins the PIAA Class AAA girls 3,200-meter run in 10:39.57.
2011 – Four area baseball and softball teams win WPIAL semifinal games. In baseball, Peters Township defeats Butler 6-4, Waynesburg slips past Laurel 4-3 and Chartiers-Houston routs Serra 9-3. In softball, Chartiers-Houston blanks South Side Beaver 5-0.
