1924 – Navy defeats Army 12-0 in Baltimore. All 12 points are scored on field goals by Navy’s Elmer Garbish, a Washington native. Garbish is carried off the field by teammates after the game.
1955 – The Los Angeles Rams select West Virginia fullback Joe Marconi, a Fredericktown native, with the sixth pick in the NFL draft.
1962 – An official groundbreaking ceremony is held for the Washington Trotting Association’s $5 million pari-mutual harness racing track at Quail Hill.
1968 – Bob Keene scores 15 points as Washington defeats host California 67-56 in the debut of new Wash High basketball coach John Unice.
1977 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade Pierre LaRouche to the Montreal Canadiens for Pete Mahovlich and Peter Lee.
1985 – Harold Hamlin scores 27 points, Tim McConnell has 17 assists and Waynesburg College defeats California 114-73 in first round of the Washington Invitational that is played at Trinity High School. Waynesburg holds Cal without a field goal for the game’s opening 9:28.
1989 – The Pittsburgh Pirates sign veteran starting pitcher Walt Terrell to a three-year contract worth $3.6 million.
1998 – Miami’s Dan Marino becomes the first player to throw 400 career TD passes, passing for 255 yards and three TDs in the Dolphins’ 30-10 win against New Orleans.
