1950 – Andy Mestrovic scores 19 points and Washington & Jefferson’s basketball team defeats Akron, 70-63.
1958 – Ellsworth High School is elected to join the Washington-Greene Conference as its 12th member. Ellsworth joins Avella, Bentleyville, Claysville, East Washington, Hickory, McDonald, Midway, Mt. Morris, Mapletown, South Side and West Greene as conference members.
1960 – Joe Yasenka scores 31 points and Chuck Kepich has 27 as Jefferson-Morgan opens the basketball season with an 85-64 victory over visiting All Saints of Masontown.
1965 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade pitcher Joe Gibbon to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Matty Alou and cash.
1965 – Offensive lineman Dave Mancuso of Monongahela is named to the Associated Press All-State Football first team. Trinity quarterback Joe Lynch and Washington running back Frank Vactor receive honorable mention.
1966 – The Pittsburgh Pirates acquire former National League stolen base champion Maury Wills in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Pirates give up infielders Bob Bailey and Gene Michael.
1969 – Ray Greene scores 34 points and Nate Milligan follows with 27 as Cal State defeats Waynesburg 110-85, spoiling the debut of new Yellow Jackets head coach Rudy Marisa.
1979 – Randy McMillan rushes for 114 yards on 26 carries and scores three touchdowns, leading Pitt to a 29-14 victory at Penn State.
1986 – Fort Cherry running back Brad Tokar, who rushed for 1,433 yards, is named the Observer-Reporter’s Offensive Player of the Year and Ringgold lineman Nelson Walker, who had eight quarterback sacks and 19 tackles for loss, is named the Defensive Player of the Year.
1989 – The Pittsburgh Pirates hire Kent Derdivanis to be the team’s No. 2 broadcaster. He replaces John Sanders.
1990 – Kenny Toomer scores 19 points as California University defeats South Carolina-Spartanburg in the championship game of the Observer-Reporter Invitational.
1991 – Charleroi running back Darrell Harding is the Offensive Player of the Year and Beth-Center linebacker Shawn Rohrer is the Defensive Player of the Year on the Observer-Reporter All-District Football Team.
1995 – Carmichaels’ Justin Voithofer scores 43 points to power Carmichaels to a 78-58 victory over South Fayette in the opening round of the Bentworth tournament.
1997 – Rege Onderick resigns after 23 years as head football coach at Burgettstown High School.
2011 – Tavon Austin returns a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, Pat Miller scores on a 52-yard interception return and Tyler Bitancurt kicks a 28-yard field goal as time expires as West Virginia clinches a share of the Big East title with a 30-27 victory at South Florida.
