Colin Brady rushed for 116 yards and scored twice and quarterback West Whipkey threw for two more as West Greene dumped Monessen, 28-14 Friday night in a Tri-County South Conference game that clinched a WPIAL Class A playoff berth for the Pioneers.
Brady scored on runs of 29 and 16 yards and Whipkey found Dalton Lucey for a 40-yards touchdown and Bryce Anderson for a seven-yard score for the Pioneers (5-0, 6-2). Whipkey completed 6 of 12 passes for 82 yards.
Jamar Bethea scored twice for Monessen (2-3, 3-5).
Avella 30, Bentworth 21
KJ Rush ran for a one touchdown, passed for another and threw a pair of two-point conversion passes in Avella’s 22-point fourth quarter as the Eagles rallied for a 30-21 victory over visiting Bentworth in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
The win was the first of the season for Avella (1-4, 1-7), which overcame a 21-8 deficit after three quarters.
A 65-yard touchdown run and Rush’s two-point conversion pass to Brandon Samol cut the gap to 21-16. Rush then capped a drive with a one-yard run to give the Eagles the lead, and his conversion pass, again to Samol, made it 24-21.
Noah Markle capped the scoring with a 14-yard TD jaunt for the Eagles.
Seth Adams helped Bentworth build a 21-8 lead by scoring on runs of one and 10 yards. Lucas Burt also had a two-yard scoring run for the Bearcats (1-4, 2-5).
The only Avella touchdown in the first three quarters was a 45-yard pass from Rush to Samol.
Mapletown 43, Jefferson-Morgan 12
Max Vanata ran for one touchdown and hooked up with Brody Evans for a pair of passing TDs as Mapletown defeated Jefferson-Morgan 43-12 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game at Parker Field.
Mapletown (3-2, 5-3) helped its playoff chances with the victory. The Maples forged a 21-0 lead by halftime.
Vanata set up Mapletown’s first score when he intercepted a J-M pass and returned it to the Rockets’ one-yard line. On the next play, he plunged into the end zone on a quarterback sneak for a 6-0 lead.
Landan Stevenson made it 13-0 when he scored on a three-yard run in the second quarter. Another J-M turnover, this one a fumble, set up Mapletown for a first-and-goal late in the first half and Stevenson scored on an eight-yard jaunt to give the Maples the 21-point lead.
Vanata passed 23 yards to Evans early in the third quarter to make it 27-0. J-M (1-4, 1-7) got on the scoreboard with a 35-yard pass from Johnny Gilbert to Ewing Jamison, but Stevenson answered with a his third TD of the game, a 65-yard run. Stevenson finished with 143 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Vanata passed six yards to Evans for Mapletown’s final TD. Colt Fowler caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Gilbert to close the scoring.
Fort Cherry 26, Union 14
Fort Cherry shut down Union in the second half, outscoring them 19-0 in a 26-14 victory in Big 7 Conference game.
Maddox Truschel scored two touchdowns and Mitchell Cook returned a fumble for a 56-yard touchdowns for the Rangers (3-2, 5-3).
Tyler Staub had a touchdown run and threw a touchdown for Union (1-4, 3-5).
Burgettstown 17, Northgate 14
Martin Laso’s 27-yard field goal in the third quarter broke a tie and sent Burgettstown to a 17-14 victory over Northgate in a Class A Big Seven Conference game.
Burgettstown (1-4, 3-4) came from behind in the first half. The Blue Devils used a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jackson LaRocka to Caleb Russell late in the second quarter to take a 14-8 lead.
After Northgate (1-4, 2-6) tied the score at 14-14 on a 75-yard scoring pass from Austin Mitchell to Lewis Clark, Burgettstown answered with the Laso field goal.
The Blue Devils’ defense then made the three-point cushion hold, getting sack of Mitchell by Teddy Gray on the game’s final play to secure the win.
LaRocka opened the scoring with a one-yard plunge in the first quarter but Northgate grabbed an 8-7 lead on a 25-yard TD run and two-point conversion in the second quarter.
Russell led the Burgettstown ground game with 18 carries for 100 yards.
Belle Vernon 49, Trinity 0
Quinton Martin caught two scoring passes for Devin Whitlock and ran for two more scores, powering Belle Vernon to a 49-0 victory over Trinity in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference game on the gold turf at James Weir Stadium.
Martin, who rushed for 181 yards on only eight carries, had TD runs of 67 and 65 yards in the second quarter. He also hauled in a 34-yard touchdown from Devin Whitlock in the second quarter as the Leopards led 35-0 at halftime.
Martin scored his third TD in the third quarter, a 23-yard pass from Whitlock.
Whitlock also had a hand in two other Belle Vernon scores, both coming in the first quarter. Whitlock opened the scoring with a 72-yard TD pass to Evan Pohlot and later returned a Trinity punt 76 yards for a touchdown.
Whitlock completed eight of nine passes for 177 yards.
Jake Gedekoh closed the scoring with a 39-yard touchdown jaunt in the fourth quarter.
Trinity quarterback Connor Roberts completed 13 of 25 passes for 125 yards.
West Allegheny 28, South Fayette 0
Three different players scored touchdowns as West Allegheny shut out South Fayette, 28-0, in an Allegheny Six Conference game.
It was the third straight loss for South Fayette (0-3, 4-4).
Brayden Lambert blasted field goals of 43 and 41 yards.
Jasmon Spencer, Brock Cornell and Nodin Tracy each scored a touchdown for West Allegheny (1-2, 4-3).
Bethel Park 38, Peters Township 8
This time, it didn’t take Peters Township two days to lose a football game.
How about 48 minutes?
That’s how long Bethel Park needed for a 38-8 victory over Peters Township in an Allegheny Six Conference game.
Peters Township, which fell to Moon, 29-26, last week in a game that was halted by weather and completed the next day, fell to 0-3 in the conference and 4-4 overall. Bethel Park moves to 3-0 in the conference and 5-3 overall.
Tyler Volpatti scored two touchdowns and Gavin Moul returned a fumble 55 yards for a back-breaking touchdown for Bethel Park.
Bethel Park built a 21-0 halftime lead.
Bethel Park scored first on a 27-yard pass from Blanc to Jake Kirchner with 5:07 left in the quarter. Troy Volpatti scored from four yards out to make it 14-0 in the second quarter.
