1965 – Mike Lynch catches a five-yard touchdown pass from his brother Joe Lynch with 5:26 remaining to break a tie and give undefeated Trinity High School a 20-14 victory over host Washington.
1974 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade outfielder Gene Clines to the New York Mets for catcher Duffy Dyer.
1975 – The World Football League folds during the 12th week of its second season. Though the league signed established NFL stars such as Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield and Jim Nance, the WFL had $10 million in reported losses and averaged only 13,370 fans per game during its second season.
1976 – Burgettstown High School moves into first place in the Black Hills Conference football standings with a 15-13 win at Northgate. Brian Pavan catches a touchdown pass from Harry Pappas, Chuck Amos kicks a field goal and Bill Tunno scores on a TD run for Burgettstown’s points.
1979 – Avella hires Jay Hockenbrock as its head wrestling coach, replacing Bill Black.
1981 – Trinity soccer player Mike Ault – Pennsylavnia’s single-season leader in goals – scores twice to improve his state record count to 63 as the Hillers rout Bethel Park, 4-0. Goalkeeper Dale Cushman stops all 19 Bethel Park shots.
1983 – Doug Strang passes for three touchdowns and runs for another score as Penn State upsets fourth-ranked West Virginia 41-23 at Beaver Stadium.
1992 – Jean Pronovost, Rick Kehoe and former coach Bob Johnson are inducted as the charter members of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Fame.
1993 – Chris Hega throws a 13-yard touchdown pass to Lee Castana with 1:55 remaining to give Charleroi a 28-21 upset of visiting East Allegheny, the top-ranked team in Class AA.
1998 – Led by medalist Scott Vallina, who shot 74, Burgettstown wins the WPIAL Division II team golf championship contested on the gold course at Lindenwood Golf Club.
2003 – Quincy Wilson rushes for 178 yards and Rasheed Marshall throws a 93-yard touchdown pass to Travis Garvin as West Virginia upsets No. 3-ranked Virginia Tech, 28-7.
