1953 – Dom Sacco scoops up a Canonsburg fumble on a punt and returns it eight yards for the game’s only score as visiting Washington High School wins its season-opening football game, 6-0.

1959 – The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4, putting and end to reliever Roy Face’s 22-game winning streak. It was his only loss of the season as he finished with an 18-1 record.

1959 – Larry Deco scores on touchdown runs of 10 and 28 yards as Avella defeats Canon-McMillan, 27-6. The game was the first in the history of the new school in Canonsburg.

1965 – Tom Wise scores on first-half runs of 54 and 52 yards, and Fred Barry rushes for 154 yards on 12 carries, as Washington defeats Bellaire (Ohio), 13-0, in a season-opening football game.

1970 – Ray Dallatore throws three touchdown passes and brother Don rushes for 116 yards and one score as Trinity defeats Wash High, 34-13.

1971 – Doug Kotar, a sophomore from Muse, returns the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown on his first varsity play, and Kentucky adds two field goals to defeat Clemson, 13-10.

1975 – Peters Township’s Brian Sullivan repeats as the winner at the County Coaches Cross Country Championships but Ringgold edges the Indians by one point to win the team title.

1976 – Tony Dorsett torments Notre Dame again by rushing for 181 yards and Pitt turns two second-quarter interceptions into touchdowns as the Panthers beat the Fighting Irish, 31-10, in South Bend, Ind.

1994 – Dave Eichelberger ends a 13-year victory drought by winning the Quicksilver Classic on the PGA Senior Tour. Eichelberger defeats runner-up Ray Floyd by two strokes.

Sept. 12

1985 – Paul Kreuzer’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Whitlatch, and Whitlach’s ensuing extra-point kick, late in the fourth quarter give West Greene a 26-25 win over Clarksburg (W.Va.) Notre Dame. West Greene overcomes an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit.

1986 – After Charleroi takes an intentional safety, Washington’s Ruben Gordon returns the ensuing free kick 55 yards for a touchdown with 1:43 remaining to give the Prexies a 26-24 victory at Wash High Stadium.

1986 – Mark Watson rushes for 115 yards, Derek Bochna gains 107 and Mike Srbinovich has 100, including 84 on one touchdown run, as Mapletown remains undefeated with a 32-15 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan.

2007 – Washington’s Tom Cochran takes a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but it takes Matt Sutton’s sacrifice fly and Robbie Knapp’s two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to give the Wild Things a 6-3 victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts in Game 2 of the Frontier League championship series in Crestwood, Ill.
