1896 – The first modern Olympic Games begin in Athens, Greece. James B. Connelly wins the first event – the hop, skip and jump.
1957 – Dick Wilson of Washington wins the 114.5-pound weight class at the National AAU Greco-Roman Championships held at Waynesburg College. Wilson, who wrestles for Toledo University, pinned Clayton Venn, Fourth Army, in the finals.
1958 – Arnold Palmer edges defending champion Doug Ford and Fred Hawkins to win The Masters. Palmer shoots a final-round 73.
1971 – Winning pitcher Dock Ellis scatters eight hits in throwing a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat Philadelphia 4-2 before 39,712 at Three Rivers Stadium. It’s the largest crowd ever to watch a Pirates home opener.
1973 – A crowd of 51,695 jams into Three Rivers Stadium to honor the late Roberto Clemente. Clemente’s uniform No. 21 is retired during a pregame cermony, then the Pirates rally in the ninth for a 7-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
1984 – Charleroi’s Andrei Constantino scores a game-high 29 points and leads the South’s second-half comeback to win the Washington-Greene Boys Basketball All-Star Game, 131-123, at Trinity High School. Charleroi’s Kevin Lee and Carmichaels’ J.L. Lechner each score 24 points for the South, which trailed 57-41 at halftime. Bevin White of Ringgold leads the North with 27 points.
1986 – Ron Faust, who coached Washington High School’s boys basketball team to its second state championship in three years, is named the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner.
1987 – Sugar Ray Leonard returns to the ring after a three-year layoff to upset Marvelous Marvin Hagler in a 12-round split decision for the middleweight title, becoming boxing’s 10th triple champion.
1990 – Washington’s Marcus Chatman scores 16 points, grabs eight rebounds and blocks two shots to lead the West Penn All-Stars to a 115-110 victory over the City League/Quad-A All-Stars in the preliminary game of the Roundball Classic at the Civic Arena. Chatman is named the West Penn team’s MVP.
1995 – J. Gawen Stoker is hired as head football coach at Trinity High School. Stoker was head coach at Bald Eagle Area for 23 years, compiling a 145-93-2 record.
