1964 – Arnold Palmer wins the Masters for the fourth time and comes within two strokes of the course record with a 274.
1966 – A crowd of 50,671 welcomes the Braves to Atlanta, but Willie Stargell spoils the occasion with a two-run homer in the 13th inning to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory.
1970 – Michel Briere rams in a rebound eight minutes into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Seals and a sweep of their Stanley Cup playoff series.
1972 – Bentworth High School’s Jeff Conn, who averaged 23 points and 16 rebounds per game, is named the Most Valuable Player on the Observer-Reporter’s All-District boys basketball team.
1979 – Washington wins the team title at the Century Conference track meet on the Prexies’ home turf. Washington’s Derek Hull is the Most Valuable Performer, winning the 120-yard high hurdles, 330 intermediate hurdles and the 220 dash.
1987 – Cleveland Browns head coach and McDonald native Marty Schottenheimer is named the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner.
1987 – Larry Mize makes a 48-foot chip shot to defeat Greg Norman on the second hole of sudden death at the Masters.
2003 – Peters Township’s Matt Warco wins three events – the 400, 800 and 1,600 meters – and is the Track MVP at the Washington-Greene Coaches Track Meet at Canon-McMillan.
2005 – Mapletown’s baseball team gives up 22 runs, 20 hits and commits eight errors against Geibel – and the Maples win the game. Held scoreless for three consecutive innings in the middle of the game, Mapletown scores 12 runs over the final two innings and defeats the host Gators, 29-22, to remain one of the Washington-Greene area’s three undefeated teams. In addition to the 51 runs, the game includes 41 hits and 15 errors.
2012 – Former Mapletown and Penn State multi-sport standout Derek Bochna and former Centerville football player Robert “Red” Worrell are announced as members of the WPIAL Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012. Bochna is the second athlete from Greene County to be inducted, following wrestler Cary Kolat.
