1948 – Carmichaels scores 12 runs in the first inning, 16 in the fourth and nine in the seventh during a 52-0 baseball victory over Wind Ridge. Carmichaels outhits the home team 41-1.
1978 – Bruce Welling, who guided West Greene’s football team to a 6-3 record in 1977, resigns as the Pioneers’ head coach.
1981 – In an International League night game, the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Sox played to a 2-2 tie through 32 innings before play was suspended at 4:07 a.m. The game was completed later in the season with Pawtucket scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning of the longest game in professional baseball history.
1984 – Bill DePaoli, who had a 124-8 career record and won two NAIA championships at California State College, is named the Vulcans’ head wrestling coach. He replaces Frank Vulcano, who resigned.
1986 – Michael Spinks wins a split decision against Larry Holmes to retain the world heavyweight title in Las Vegas.
1987 – Philadelphia’s Mike Schmidt hits his 500th home run with two outs in the ninth inning to rally the Phillies to an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium.
1991 – Trinity’s Tyrone Wormsley wins three events and sets the school record in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet at the Butler Invitational. Wormsley also wins the 110 and 300 hurdles.
1991 – Evander Holyfield retains the heavyweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision over 42-year-old challenger George Foreman in Atlantic City, N.J.
