1958 – Tim Lee, Charleroi High School left-handed pitcher, throws a no-hitter in the Cougars’ 5-0 Section 16 victory over California. Lee strikes out nine and walks three.

1984 – Herschel Walker rushes for 152 yards and the New Jersey Generals score two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat the Pittsburgh Maulers 14-10 in a cold rain at Three Rivers Stadium.

1987 – Avella wins its first girls softball game in four years by edging Immaculate Conception 17-16 in Section 13-AA. Eagles catcher Nicole Morris goes 4-for-4.

1988 – Hours after signing a letter of intent with Seton Hill College, Canon-McMillan’s Maria Janco scores 18 points, grabs six rebounds, has six steals, six assists and is named MVP in the West’s 75-64 victory over the East in the Washington-Greene County Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game.

1993 – Pittsburgh’s 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils extends the Penguins’ NHL record playoff winning streak to 14 games.

1994 – Monessen’s Michael Moorer outpoints Evander Holyfield to win the IBF and WBA world boxing titles and become the first left-handed heavyweight champion.

1995 – The Cincinnati Bengals make Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

2003 – Ron Skiles is hired to serve a second stint as Bentworth High School’s football coach. Skiles coached the Bearcats to a 54-27 record during the 1980s.
