High school baseball

Andrew Kocan’s two-out, two-strike double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Mason Fixx from first base and gave Canon-McMillan a 2-1 victory over Norwin in a Class 6A Section 2 game Wednesday at Wild Things Park.

With the score tied 1-1, Fixx drew a two-out walk off reliever Sebastian Rosado and Kocan followed with his game-winning hit to center field.

Canon-McMillan (1-4, 1-7) had tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth when Fixx hit a sacrifice fly.

Nate Vidmar pitched a three-hit complete game, allowing only an unearned run. He struck out five and walked one.

  • Yough scored six runs on only three hits, taking advantage of five Charleroi errors and defeating the Cougars 6-3 in Class 3A Section 4.

Both teams are 3-2 in the tightly packed section standings.

Ben Shields had two hits, including a double, for Charleroi (5-2 overall). Ethan Hadsell also had a pair of hits.

  • Greensburg Central Catholic did all its scoring in the first three innings and held off a late rally by Monessen to edge the Greyhounds 7-6 in Class A Section 2.

GCC (3-2, 4-2) was held to one hit after scoring five runs in the opening inning.

Monessen (2-3, 2-5) scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings. R.J. DiEugenio had a double and single for the Greyhounds. Jack Sacco also had two hits.

High school softball

Paige McAvoy went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, three RBI and three runs as Chartiers-Houston walloped OLSH 14-5 in a key Class 2A Section 4 game Wednesday.

Meadow Ferri went 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI for the Bucs (5-0, 7-1). Bella Hess and Ellen Richey went a combined 4-for-7 with three RBI and four runs. Richey had a triple and Nicolette Kloes had two doubles.

The Bucs have outscored their last three opponents by a combined score of 62-5 and last five by a combined 86-8.

Justene Giles and Cassidy Fabiano each had a home run for OLSH (3-1, 3-1).

  • Rylee Rohbeck doubled, homered and drove in five runs to lead South Fayette to a 9-6 victory over Moon in Class 5A Section 4.

Haley Nicholson homered for the Lions (2-4, 5-5) and Sage Deramo knocked in a run and scored. Maddie Cavenaugh had two hits, including a double.

Olivia Logan went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two run and two RBI for Moon (0-5, 0-6).

  • Amarah McCutchen hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored the winning run in Southmoreland’s 4-3 victory over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 3 game.

Waynesburg tied it in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Paige Jones.

Kylee Goodman had a solo home run among her three hits and Kendal Lemley singled in a run for Waynesburg (3-1, 5-2).

McCutchen had three hits and three RBI for the Scotties (3-1, 5-1). Taylor and Kaylee Dopplehauer each had a double.

  • Mt. Lebanon scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally and defeat visiting Peters Township 11-8 in a Class 6A Section 1 game.

Mt. Lebanon trailed 6-0 in the second inning and 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth. Samantha Phillips hit a two-run homer for the Blue Devils in the pivotal inning. Phillips finished the game with four RBI and Olivia Buckiso had a double and three RBI.

Amber Wilkes was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Peters Township. Skylar Lemansky and Mia Falbo also had doubles.

  • Emma Henry fired a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and Greensburg Central catholic remained unbeaten in Class A Section 2 with a 17-1 win in five innings over host Jefferson-Morgan.

GCC (3-0, 6-2) is a half-game behind first-place West Greene in the section standings.

Jasmine Demaske belted a home run for Jefferson-Morgan (1-3, 1-3).

College baseball

Washington & Jefferson’s winning streak has reached 17 games after a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Grove City, 3-2 and 5-3, Wednesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

W&J is still unbeaten in the PAC at 16-0 and 23-6 overall.

In the opening game, winning pitcher Jameson Campbell and reliever Dante DiMatteo combined on a three-hitter and Peter Kalinski drove in three runs.

Kalinski hit a two-run homer in the first inning and his RBI grounder in the third gave W&J a 3-0 lead.

Grove City (9-6, 19-9) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings but DiMatteo retired all five batters he faced for his sixth save.

  • Waynesburg swept a PAC doubleheader at Geneva, 5-1 and 6-0.

The sweep snapped a six-game losing streak for Waynesburg and moved the Yellow Jackets to 5-11 in the PAC and 9-19 overall.

Alec Engelmore scattered eight hits in the opener, and Bryce Bedilion scored twice and drove in a run.

Bedilion then threw six shutout innings to get the win in the second game and combined with reliever Ryan Sullivan on a six-hitter. Brandon Durbin hit a two-run homer in the first inning.

Girls lacrosse

Delaney Kern scored four goals and four other Peters Township players had multiple tallies as the Indians defeated Bethel Park 14-9 Tuesday night.

Karson Martin scored two goals and assisted on three others, Lanie Filoon scored three times, and Elena Traficante and Grace Kail each put in two goals for the Indians.

In the NBA

Phoenix Suns All-Star guard Devin Booker has a right hamstring strain, clouding his status for the remainder of the team’s first-round playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Suns said Booker’s MRI Wednesday confirmed a “mild” hamstring strain. Booker was hurt in Tuesday’s Game 2 loss during the third quarter when he tried to defend a New Orleans shot on a fast break. The 25-year-old was sprinting downcourt, jumped and then grabbed at his right hamstring after he landed.

In college basketball

The Big Ten basketball tournaments are coming to Minneapolis.

The conference announced Wednesday that the women’s tournament will be held at Target Center in 2023 and 2024 and the men’s tournament will be played there in 2024. All 14 teams are automatic entrants in both events. Chicago will host the men’s basketball tournament in 2023 as a makeup for 2021 when the event was shifted to Indianapolis due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As part of the Big Ten’s effort to rotate host sites around its 11-state footprint, Minneapolis will become the fifth city to host the men’s tournament.

  • Kentucky forward Oscar Tshiebwe will return for his senior year with the Wildcats after a breakout season in which he swept national player of the year awards.

In golf

Pebble Beach is the third course to become an anchor site for the U.S. Open, with the USGA announcing Wednesday four U.S. Opens and four U.S. Women’s Open over the next 26 years.

Pebble Beach joins Pinehurst No. 2 and Oakmont Country Club as anchor sites, a strategy that allows the USGA to return to its most famous U.S. Open courses more frequently.
