1956 – Rocky Marciano retires as the undefeated heavyweight boxing champion. He finishes with a 49-0 record, including six title defenses and 43 knockouts.
1982 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select Baylor running back Walter Abercrombie in the first round of the NFL Draft.
1984 – Upper St. Clair and McGuffey combine for 31 hits – 11 of them home runs – with USC winning 25-13 in a Section 9-AAA baseball slugfest.
1989 – Fort Cherry’s Pam Noble scores 14 points and grabs eight rebounds, powering the South All-Stars to a 63-62 win in the Washington-Greene Senior Stars girls basketball all-star game. Noble is named the game’s MVP.
1992 – Bob Errey scores two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins stave off elimination with a 5-2 victory over Washington, cutting the Capitals’ lead in the playoff series to 3-2.
2013 – Washington native Dan Burt is hired as head women’s basketball coach at Duquesne University.
2018 – Bo Haines hits a tiebreaking solo home run and Ringgold gets its first baseball win over Belle Vernon in eight years by edging the Leopards 4-3 in Section 3-AAAA.
