Deadline looms for open council seat in Charleroi

Letters of interest must be received by the close of business Tuesday.

Interested Charleroi residents have until Tuesday to submit letters of interest for a vacant council position.

Councilwoman Jeannine Motycki resigned July 13, citing health problems and a toxic environment in council chambers.

Her resignation wasn’t unanimously accepted, but it passed in a 5-1 vote with Paul Pivovarnik, Nancy Ellis, Joe Smith, Cathy Diess and Larry Celaschi voting yes and Councilman Jerry Jericho casting the lone no vote.

Motycki took to social media following her resignation to thank those who supported her decision.

“The last few days have been overwhelming,” she posted on social media. “The texts, (Facebook) messages, cards and letters of appreciation that I have received due to my resignation have been beautiful.

“Thank you for the support and understanding. The fight isn’t over, many say it’s just begun. The truth about some things were unveiled in my letter, but there are so many more to come. The community deserves better.”

She then let people know how to apply to fill her spot. Council will accept letters of interest to fill the vacancy until the end of the business day Tuesday.

Whoever is chosen by council, likely at this month’s voting meeting, will serve until Jan. 2, 2024.

Candidates must be an elector in the borough and must have lived in Charleroi for at least one year prior to the appointment.

Letters of interest can be mailed or hand delivered to Borough Manager Matt Staniszewski at the borough office, located at 338 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, PA 15022. Letters can also be e-mailed to bcso@charleroiborough.org with the subject line “Charleroi Borough Council Vacancy Submission” and a last name.

Any submissions received after the deadline or deemed inappropriate will not be considered.

All candidates who accept letters of interest will be discussed among council members at their agenda meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

A vote will be taken to fill the spot the following week, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m.

Staniszewski said two people have submitted letters of interest so far, and one of them people is not eligible. “Unfortunately, the second candidate was a resident of Fallowfield Township so they are not able to fill the vacancy,” he said. “However, we encourage anyone from Charleroi who meets the necessary requirements to get involved. This is a great way to become a part of your local government.”

Questions can be directed to Staniszewski at 724-483-6011 or via email at manager@charleroiboro.org .
