1959 – Relief ace Elroy Face picks up his 16th straight victory of the season, and his 21st over a two-season span, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3, in the second game of a doubleheader.

1970 – Pittsburgh’s Roberto Clemente’s 10th consecutive hit over two games powers the Pirates to an 11-0 victory over the host Los Angeles Dodgers.

1982 – Washington overcomes a 3-0 deficit and defeats Del City, Okla., 11-4, in the semifinals of the Pony League World Series. Andy McIlvaine, Dave Hower and J.J. Heider hit consecutive home runs for Washington in the third inning. Current Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy scores the game’s first run for Del City.

1986 – Pittsburgh Pirates players Barry Bonds and Barry Jones, along with instructor Bill Virdon, conduct a baseball clinic at Peterswood Park as part of Peters Township Community Day.

1994 – Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert, cornerbacks Mel Blount and Rod Woodson, defensive tackle Joe Greene and center Mike Webster are named to the NFL’s All-Time Team in conjunction with the league’s 75th anniversary.

1997 – Hours after being eliminated from finals contention, Washington defeats eventual champion Danville, Calif., 3-0, as Patrick Sadler pitches a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts at the Pony League World Series.

2005 – Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities and the union representing their non-faculty coaches reach a contract agreement that averts a strike during the fall sports season.

2017 — Los Angeles lefty Rich Hill loses his perfect game on an error in the ninth inning, then loses his no-hitter on a leadoff home run in the 10th by Josh Harrison that sends the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Dodgers 1-0. Jordy Mercer lead off the ninth with a sharp grounder that smacks off third baseman Logan Forsythe’s glove for an error. Hill retires the next three batters. Hill returns for the 10th and Harrison sends his 99th pitch into the first row of seats in left field, just out of the reach of left fielder Curtis Granderson. Hill strikes out 10 without a walk.
