NOT DONE Two local Evolving Artists Dance Studio students recently returned from Pennsylvania competitions bearing tiaras, trophies and regional and national titles.
Cora Baney, 7, wowed the judges at the four-day All Out Dance Competition July 17 in Hershey, Pa., with a jazz routine set to the song “What’s My Name.”
The dance was choreographed by Mandi Angelini, Baney’s mother, instructor and owner of Evolving Artists. Baney competed at the advanced level against other soloists aged 6 through 8.
“She really was just looking for another place to dance. She was really excited to go and perform. She wasn’t expecting to win the title at all,” said Angelini, who attended Point Park University for dance. “She was really surprised and excited.”
The Trinity West Elementary student, who started dance at age two and has been competing for about three years, was all smiles when judges awarded her the national title.
“She got a little tiara, which she loves to wear around. She got a trophy that I think is taller than her,” laughed Angelini.
Another Evolving Artists Dance Studio student also brought home hardware. Fiona Colilla, 11, competed at the Extreme Talent Showcase in Pittsburgh April 13, and was awarded the title Pittsburgh Junior Miss Extreme Talent. She danced to “Song of Durin,” choreographed by Angelini.
Along with a trophy and tiara, Colilla earned a spot on the Extreme Team, a group of dancers from across the state who will perform in Hershey in December.
“I think it’s a really nice artform,” said Angelini, who is proud of her dancer’s accomplishments. “It’s really special.”
Evolving Artists is accepting new recreational and competitive students for the fall season, which begins in September.
