University of Maryland recruit Ashlyn Basinger scored six goals as Waynesburg defeated Monessen 6-0 in a match Monday night that was shortened because of lightning.
Waynesburg goalkeeper Peyton Cowell had the shutout.
- Charleroi pulled away by scoring three goals in the second half to defeat a young Bentworth squad, 4-0.
In the NHL
The San Jose Sharks have traded goalie Adin Hill to the division rival Vegas Golden Knights for a 2024 fourth-round pick.
The Sharks had a glut at goalie with James Reimer and Kaapo Kahkonen slated to be the top two options, leading to the decision to trade Hill on Monday after one season in San Jose.
The Knights were looking for goaltending help with Robin Lehner expected to miss the entire season because of hip surgery.
In college football
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson was questionable for the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish’s opener against No. 2 Ohio State.
Patterson has been dealing with an injury to his right foot for about two weeks. Freeman said he did expect the fifth-year senior to practice this week.
Patterson was one of the best centers in the country last year for Notre Dame and a preseason All-American. He was listed as the starter at left guard on the Irish’s first depth chart of the season, released Monday.
- True freshman Drew Allar, a five-star recruit, has been named Penn State’s No. 2 quarterback.
Sean Clifford is the starter, but Allar, an Ohio product, moved ahead of Christian Veilleux, who entered fall camp as the projected backup.
The Nittany Lions open their season Thursday night at Purdue. Fox will televise the game. Kickoff is 8 p.m.
- Coach Jim Harbaugh has decided to start Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara when No. 8 Michigan opens its season Saturday at home against Colorado State.
When the Wolverines host Hawaii the following week, Harbaugh has chosen to give J.J. McCarthy their first snap.
Harbaugh said no one can be sure who the team’s starting quarterback will be after the first two games.
- Kentucky running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. will not play in Saturday night’s season opener against Miami of Ohio, and coach Mark Stoops expects multiple-game suspensions for the No. 20 Wildcats’ rushing leader and other players.
Rodriguez pleaded guilty this summer to driving under the influence and other charges following his arrest in May. Neither the senior nor linebacker Jordan Wright was listed on the depth chart released Monday.
Rodriguez is coming off a season in which he rushed for a career-high 1,379 yards and nine touchdowns to help Kentucky finish 10-3 last season and win the Citrus Bowl.
