1961- Syracuse running back Ernie Davis becomes the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy.
1965 – Dave Hart, a native of Connellsville, is hired as Pitt’s head football coach. He replaces John Michelosen, who was fired after 11 seasons.
1976 – California State gets 18 points from Delmer Beshore and leads the entire game as the Vulcans defeat visiting Washington & Jefferson, 80-71.
1976 – Jackie Sherrill is hired as Pitt’s football coach, succeeding Johnny Majors. Sherrill was a former assistant with the Panthers and was the head coach at Washington State.
1977 – Senior guard John Abel scores a career-high 40 points to lead Immaculate Conception to a 62-58 come-from-behind boys basketball win over Canon-McMillan.
1983 – The Boston Red Sox trade pitcher John Tudor to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Mike Easler.
1988 – Pitt becomes the 29th NCAA Division I school to win 1,000 basketball games by defeating Jacksonville 81-74. Jason Matthews leads the Panthers with a career-high 34 points.
2010 – Sidney Crosby has a goal and an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins extend their winning streak to 10 games with a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
