Wild Things re-sign Peterson for 2023
The Wild Things announced the re-signing of first baseman Tristan Peterson for 2023. Next season would mark Peterson’s third with the team.
He returned to Washington after the all-star break in 2022 and appeared in 32 regular-season games, batting .302 with three doubles, one triple, six home runs and 22 RBI.
“This will be a big year for TP. He needs to show what he has learned in his first two years and take that next step in his development, both offensively and defensively,” said Washington manager Tom Vaeth. “He needs to be a guy that produces when called upon. If he can do that on a regular basis he’ll be in the lineup.”

The Los Angeles Rams claimed quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers Tuesday, adding the former No. 1 pick to their options behind injured Matthew Stafford for the rest of the season.
Mayfield, the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner and former Cleveland Browns starter, was released by the Panthers on Monday at his request after seven disappointing games with Carolina.
The struggling Rams host the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night, and it’s unclear whether Mayfield could be ready to participate for a team already down to backup quarterbacks John Wolford – who has been battling a neck injury and other ailments – and Bryce Perkins.
n The Baltimore Ravens have signed receiver DeSean Jackson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
Baltimore signed Jackson to the practice squad in October. He was promoted to play in three games so far, catching five passes for 100 yards, including a 62-yarder in a loss at Jacksonville two weekends ago.
Jackson turned 36 on Dec. 1, but the Ravens need all the help they can get at receiver with Rashod Bateman out because of foot problems.
n Tennessee owner Amy Adams Strunk fired general manager Jon Robinson in the midst of his seventh season with the Titans off to a 7-5 start.
Robinson was hired as general manager in January 2016 after this franchise had a combined 5-27 record in 2014 and 2015. The Titans never went worse than 9-7 in Robinson’s tenure.

The first World Cup held in an Arab nation has produced the Arab world’s first quarterfinalist.
Morocco became only the fourth African country to reach the quarterfinals at the biggest soccer tournament in the world by beating Spain 3-0 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw through extra time.
n With Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, the superstar striker’s replacement scored a hat trick to lead Portugal over Switzerland 6-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals.
Goncalo Ramos, a 21-year-old forward who only made his Portugal debut last month, made his first start for his country and demonstrated the kind of clinical finishing Ronaldo was once known for.

Lane had suffered a stroke in 2002 and his son, Tommy, said his father had taken a significant turn for the worse recently before entering hospice care Friday. He died at his home in Reno, Nevada, with his wife, Kaye, and two sons in the home.
Lane officiated more than 100 title fights, sharing the ring with greats such as Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis, and was respected for his fairness and toughness.
