1959 – McDonald High School remains undefeated in Section 15 basketball with a 121-55 thumping of West Alexander. Meade McKee leads the way with 47 points, which includes 21 field goals.

1970 – Dave Minda scores 34 points as Avella’s basketball team stays in playoff contention with an 80-74 win over Fort Cherry.

1971 – West Virginia edges host Pitt 95-91 in a college basketball game at the Pitt Field House. WVU leads 92-91 with 14 seconds left when Pitt is called for a technical foul as overzealous fans throw debris onto the court. It’s the second technical called on Pitt. The first was when fans tossed garbage, including eggs and vegetables, onto the court.

1979 – Bob Bertolotti makes two free throws with seven seconds left in overtime to give Burgettstown a 63-61 victory over Washington in Section 9-AA and keep the Blue Devils’ playoff hopes alive.

1984 – Despite 39 points by Carmichaels’ J.L. Lechner, Mon Valley Catholic wins its 11th straight basketball game, 67-65, over the visiting Mikes in Section 19-A.

1985 – Michael Seibert of Washington and partner Judy Blumberg become the first five-time national ice dancing gold medalists at the United States Figure Skating Championships at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

1992 – Jennifer Wendell scores 27 points and becomes the first girls basketball player at West Greene to score 1,000 points as the Pioneers win at Bentworth 50-39.

1996 – Harvard’s Elizabeth Proudfit, a Washington graduate, scores the 1,000th point of her career in the Crimson’s 88-63 victory over Brown. Produfit is the ninth Harvard player to score 1,000 points.

1999 – Brandon Hewitt scores 29 points and West Greene ends a 52-game basketball losing streak with a 61-51 victory over Mapletown.

2000 – World Wrestling Federation mastermind Vince McMahon unveils his latest creation: the XFL, a new pro football league.

2005 – Brooke Ghilani scores 18 points, including her 1,000th at Fort Cherry, as the Rangers win their first girls basketball section title with a 58-14 victory over Burgettstown in Section 5-AA.

2011 – Morgan Iacovino scores a game-high 16 points and Charleroi avenges an earlier loss to Washington by defeating the Prexies 47-40. It is Washington’s first loss in Section 4-AA.

2012 – The 100th career win by Connor Schram (120 pounds), a 16-1 technical fall over Austin Shaw, helps top-seeded Canon-McMillan to a 52-9 win over North Allegheny in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament semifinals at Ringgold.
