McGuffey’s Dunn win WPIAL rifle title

Riley Dunn, a sophomore at McGuffey High School, won the WPIAL rifle individual championship Thursday at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club, posting a score of 200.19 to edge Butler’s Brianna Bell at 200.18.

Dunn is McGuffey’s first champion at the Individual Championships since John Hupp claimed the gold in 2011. She joins Hupp, Rebekah Ashbrook (2008), Joe Nuzum (2006), and West Lauff (2005) as the five Highlanders to win WPIAL rifle titles.

Dunn and Bell were followed on the leaderboard by four scores of 200.17 – Butler’s Hannah Beacon, Hempfield Area’s Lydia Dunn, and Penn-Trafford’s Seth Baughman and Mallory McRae.

A total of 16 shooters qualified for state competition: Riley Dunn, Bell, Beacon, Baughman, Lydia Dunn, McRae, Lily McMahon (Trinity), Taylor Burnfied (Waynesburg), Jack Loomis (Upper St. Clair), Gracie Ruffner (Armstrong), Sierra Allison (Trinity), Morgan Malecki (Woodland Hills), Adam Colhoun (Bethel Park), Alexia McCabe (Hempfield), Hayleigh Gorog (Butler), and Alex Jackson (Mt. Lebanon).

PAC diving

Washington & Jeffrerson sophomore Taylor Weyrich of McMurray won her second straight individual title in 1-meter diving Thursday on the opening day of competition at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. The three-day championship event is being hosted by Grove City at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Weyrich compiled a total score of 431.05 to win her second 1-meter title in as many tries. Weyrich put together a strong showing to earn the title by a nearly 46 points, as Ali Cowan of Chatham claimed second claimed second place with a score of 385.90. Kamryn Kerr of Grove City was third with 379.30.

In college basketball

Jack Nunge had 22 points and nine rebounds, and No. 25 Xavier snapped a two-game losing streak with a 74-68 victory over No. 24 Connecticut on Friday night.

Zach Freemantle scored all 12 of his points in the second half, and Nate Johnson also had 12 points for Xavier (17-7, 7-6 Big East).

R.J. Cole scored 22 points to lead UConn (16-7, 7-5 Big East). Tyrese Martin added 18 points for the Huskies.

  • Jamal Cain scored 29 points as Oakland edged past Robert Morris, 71-68.

Trey Townsend had 18 points for Oakland (17-8, 10-4 Horizon League). Micah Parrish added 15 points and nine rebounds. Jalen Moore had 9 points and 10 assists.

Brandon Stone had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Colonials (6-19, 4-12). Kahliel Spear added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Matt Mayers had 11 points.

The Golden Grizzlies improve to 2-0 against the Colonials this season. Oakland defeated Robert Morris 79-61 Dec. 30.

In the NBA

Caris LeVert scored 22 points and had five assists in his return to Indiana, and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ defense put together a strong fourth quarter to rally for a 120-113 victory over the Pacers on Friday night.

The Cavs stayed within striking distance of the Eastern Conference’s top seed by winning their fifth straight overall. They also ended a three-game losing streak at Indianapolis that dated to December 2018.

Jarrett Allen had 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Kevin Love scored his 7,000th career point since joining Cleveland and finished with 14. LeVert was acquired by the Cavs on Sunday in a trade with the Pacers.
