1950 – Washington & Jefferson’s Andy Mestrovic scores 41 points in the Presidents’ 81-64 victory over Ohio Wesleyan.

1955 – Jack Wiley, head football coach at Waynesburg College the last four seasons and a former lineman with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is hired for Pitt’s coaching staff. Wiley’s teams at Waynesburg had a 22-9-1 record.

1965 – Frank L. Vulcano submits his resignation, effective at the end of the season, as head wrestling coach at Chartiers-Houston High School.

1966 – Despite a 39-point performance by Chartiers-Houston’s Jerry Havelka, Peters Township beats the Bucs, 92-83, and moves into first place in Section 15.?1975 – Peters Township’s Jay Carter sets the WPIAL record in the 100-yard freestyle and wins the 50 freetsyle, and Canon-McMillan’s Mike DiCio is the 1-meter diving champion, at the WPIAL meet at Pitt’s Trees Pool.

1978 – Leon Spinks wins a 15-round split decision over Muhammad Ali to take the world heavyweight title at Las Vegas.

1979 – Lisa Main scores 16 points, Rhonda Wise has 15 and Julie Gaul 13 as Washington wins its girls basketball section title with a 62-45 victory over South Park.

1981 – Bruce Atkins scores 20 points and Duquesne nearly blows a 19-point lead in the second half before holding off Pitt 66-64 in an Eastern Eight Conference game at the Civic Arena.

1985 – Mike Dobbin, Ron Rothka and Tim Rothka give Canon-McMillan an early 11-0 lead and the Big Macs go on to a 48-2 victory over Keystone Oaks in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Team Tournament.

1991 – Dom Faraci and Joey Wall combine for 39 points to lead Monessen to a 66-59 victory over West Greene before a sold-out crowd at the Pioneers’ gym. The win gives Monessen the Section 19-A championship.

1991 – Mike Edwards scores 17 points and grabs 18 rebounds to lead Washington to a 74-63 victory at Peters Township in the regular-season finale. The game draws the largest basketball crowd at the PT gym in eight years. The Little Prexies extend their winning streak to 19 games.

1992 – Jefferson-Morgan wins its third WPIAL Class AA wrestling team tournament championship by defeating Chartiers-Houston 59-9 at Chartiers Valley High School. The Rockets’ Cary Kolat improves his record to 124-0 with a pin in 52 seconds at 140 pounds.

1994 – Kentucky makes one of the greatest comebacks in college basketball history with a 99-95 victory over LSU after trailing by 31 points with 15:30 to play.

1996 – McGuffey defeats Hempfield 37-19 in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling team tournament to give Highlanders coach Mark Caffrey his 200th career victory.

1998 – Dale Earnhardt wins the Daytona 500 for the first time in his 20th try.

1999 – Waynesburg College, a longtime member of the NAIA, accepts an invitation to join the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
