In the NBA
Jarrett Allen went from being snubbed to a sub.
Passed over in fan voting and overlooked by coaches as a reserve, Cleveland’s center will replace an injured James Harden at this year’s All-Star Game in Cleveland and give the Cavaliers two All-Stars for the first time since 2018.
Allen’s strong second season with the Cavs has helped push them among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The 6-10 Allen was rewarded Monday by being chosen to take Harden’s place by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
- Tyreke Evans is eligible to return to the NBA after he was reinstated by the league and the National Basketball Players Association on Monday.
The 32-year-old was the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. He was dismissed and disqualified from the league on May 17, 2019, for testing positive for a prohibited substance under the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program.
Evans will become an unrestricted free agent Friday, meaning he can negotiate a contract with any team.
The 6-6 Evans last played for the Indiana Pacers in 2018.
- Kyle Kuzma scored 17 of his 23 points in the third quarter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 16, and Deni Avdija had 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Washington Wizards sent the Detroit Pistons to their eighth straight loss, 103-94 Monday night.
In the NHL
Jack Eichel will make his debut with the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday, playing for the first time since being acquired from Buffalo and since he became the first NHL player to undergo artificial disk replacement surgery on his neck in November.
In college basketball
Foster Loyer scored 24 points, Hyunjung Lee added 20 points, and Davidson topped Duquesne 72-61 Monday night.
Michael Jones had 10 points for Davidson (21-4, 11-2 Atlantic 10 Conference). Luka Brajkovic added 11 rebounds.
Amir Spears had 20 points for the Dukes (6-17, 1-10), whose losing streak reached 10 games. Jackie Johnson III added 14 points. Kevin Easley Jr. had 12 points and seven rebounds.
- Keve Aluma scored 24 points and sank two clutch shots down the stretch to allow Virginia Tech to hold off Commonwealth rival Virginia, 62-53 for its sixth straight win.
After Kadin Shedrick scored to pull the Cavaliers within four points, 54-50, with just under three minutes left, Aluma found open space in the middle of the key and threw down a dunk to push the Hokies lead back to six. A minute later he knocked down a turnaround baseline jumper to make it 58-50.
- Gonzaga keeps finding its way back to the top of the the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll.
The Zags reclaimed the No. 1 ranking Monday for a third stint this season atop the AP Top 25, moving up one spot to swap places with Auburn after the Tigers fell to No. 2 following their first loss since November.
Mark Few’s Bulldogs earned 56 of 60 first-place votes to reach No. 1 for a fifth week this season. Gonzaga (21-2) was the preseason No. 1 after last year’s run to the NCAA championship game for what became its only loss. The Zags spent three weeks at the top before falling out after a loss to Duke, and also spent a week at No. 1 in mid-January before being supplanted by Auburn.
It’s become a regular position for Gonzaga over the past four seasons, one no other team in the country can match.
