1960 – Mike Booth is hired as head football coach at Jefferson-Morgan High School. Booth replaces Steve Yourchik, who resigned after five seasons.

1960 – Merv Holland scores 34 points and Fort Cherry clinches at least a share of the Section 4 basketball title with an 84-61 victory over Mt. Lebanon.

1965 – Washington wins its first basketball section championship since 1959 by defeating Burgettstown 88-61. Frank Vactor scores 26 points and Clarence Smith has 24 for the Little Prexies, who have won 11 straight games in Section 4.

1968 – Bernie Galiffa scores 18 points to lead five Donora players in double figures as the Dragons clinch the Section 4-A championship with a 78-63 victory over Monessen in the 100th meeting between the schools. Donora is one of three remaining undefeated teams in Class A.

1971 – Stan Boskovich scores 54 points, Ken Valencik has 37 and Albert Gallatin sets a state single-game scoring record in defeating winless West Greene, 167-30. AG leads 75-17 at halftime, then scores 46 points in each of the final two quarters.

1974 – Peters Township swimmers win the WPIAL team championship, outdistancing runner-up Butler by 25 points. The Indians’ defending state champion Eric Schwotzer wins the 100-yard backstroke in a school record 53.566 seconds.

1979 – Rick Webb scores 17 points to lead Ringgold to a 56-42 victory over Belle Vernon that nets the Rams the Section 3-AAA championship.

1986 – Canon-McMillan gets the 600th wrestling win in the program’s history, a 47-15 drubbing of Latrobe in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament.

1994 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade defensemen Marty McSorley and Jim Paek to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forwards Tomas Sandstrom and Shawn McEachern.

1989 – John Menhart, an assistant coach for 10 years at Carmichaels High School, is promoted to the position of head football coach for the Mikes.

1998 – Mandy Beisel sets Waynesburg College’s women’s single-game scoring record with 38 points in the Yellow Jackets’ 100-36 victory over host Chatham.

2004 – Chalise Popeck makes six three-pointers and scores 23 points, leading Trinity to a 52-47 double-overtime victory over Norwin in a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round playoff game at Ringgold.

2004 – Pittsburgh loses an NHL-record 12th straight home game, 8-4 to Toronto.

2005 – The NHL cancels what is left of its schedule after a round of last-gasp negotiations fail to resolve differences over a salary cap – the flash-point issue that led to a lockout.

2012 – McGuffey hires Ed Dalton as its head football coach and athletic director. Dalton had been the head coach at Trinity since 1999.

2017 – Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby feeds Chris Kunitz for a first-period goal against Winnipeg to become the 86th player in NHL history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He adds an assist on Phil Kessel’s game-tying goal in the third and then puts the winner past Connor Hellebuyck with 21 seconds left in overtime as the Penguins escaped with a 4-3 victory.
