High school playoffs: Monessen stays in high gear

Monessen’s defense held Riverview to just two first half points on the way to a 51-16 victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 1A playoffs.
Mercedes Majors scored a game high 29 points to power the Greyhound offense. This was the first playoff win for Monessen since 2011.
Monessen (17-4) will move on to play Aquinas Academy Thursday at a time and place to be determined.
Riverview finished the season with a 5-14 record.
GC Catholic 51, Chartiers-Houston 27: Bailey Kuhns and Mia Morgan combined for 40 points to help Greenesburg Central Catholic to a 51-27 victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs.
Kuhns had a game-high 23 points and Morgan added 17 points for GCC (18-5), which shut out the Bucs in the first quarter, 10-0,
Dominique Mortimer’s 16 points led the Bucs (11-11).
Apollo Ridge 40, Fort Cherry 39: Fort Cherry came up one point short against Apollo Ridge, 40-39, in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs.
Fort Cherry led 26-25 heading into the final quarter but AR outscored the Rangers, 15-13, for the win.
Raney Staub scored 18 points for the Rangers (16-7). Brinway Toland matched Staub’s point total for Apollo Ridge (13-4).
Boys results
Aliquippa 71, Waynesburg 41: Aliquippa outscored Waynesburg 44-16 in the second half to cap a 71-41 victory over Waynesburg in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
Chase Henkins scored 17 points and Jacob Mason added 15 for the Raiders.
