Trainer Parker notches 1,000th win

Trainer Norm Parker notched career win 1,000 Friday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows when Dew A Little Dance won the ninth race. Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. drove for owner/breeder Tom Klosky, Jr.

It seemed that Parker, whose horses have earned more than $12.3 million in purses, always was destined to be a horseman. His father Dwane, now retired after many years as a Meadows-based trainer, was one of the most respected in the business. Sister Kathy Parker was the longtime editor of The Horseman and Fair World and now holds a similar position with Hoof Beats, the magazine of the U.S. Trotting Association. Sister Sally Bolon is a horsewoman, the wife of one trainer/driver (Rod Bolon) and the mother of another (Kyle Bolon).

Parker launched his career primarily as a driver and amassed 207 wins but soon switched to full-time training, scoring his initial victory in 1997.

In the NFL

The New York Giants hired Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as their head coach Friday.

Daboll, 46, replaces Joe Judge, who was fired two days after the Giants finished a 4-13 season, their fifth straight double-digit losing season.

Daboll spent the previous four seasons as the Bills’ offensive coordinator. He was the first person new general manager Joe Schoen interviewed after Schoen was hired last Friday.

Daboll came to the Bills in 2018 after helping Alabama win its 17th national championship as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Fury-Whyte fight set

Tyson Fury will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Dillian Whyte in the UK this spring after promoter Frank Warren won a purse bid for the bout.

Top Rank, Fury’s U.S.-based promoter, and Warren’s Queensberry Promotions announced the deal Friday, concluding months of drawn-out negotiations over the unbeaten Fury’s future. Warren is paying just over $41 million for the rights, according to WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, making it the richest purse bid in boxing history.

For Fury (31-0-1, 22 knockouts) it will be his first bout since a dramatic 11th-round knockout of Deontay Wilder last October in Las Vegas, completing their entertaining fight trilogy.

The date and location of the bout aren’t certain yet, but Fury’s announcement confirmed he and Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) plan to meet in the spring somewhere in the UK.

  • John Collins and Trae Young each scored 21 points, and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Boston Celtics 108-92 for their sixth straight victory.

Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 19 points for Atlanta, and Danilo Gallinari had 14 on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. The Hawks shot 46.1%, compared to 34.9% for the Celtics.

Jaylen Brown had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Boston, which had won two straight and seven of 10. Jayson Tatum scored 20 points.

In the NHL

The Seattle Kraken at New York Islanders game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to an impending snow storm in the New York area.

A state of emergency was called by New York governor Kathy Hochul on Friday, and the game was rescheduled for Wednesday night at UBS Arena.
