1934 – Babe Ruth hits his 700th home run in a 4-2 victory over Tommy Bridges and the Detroit Tigers. Lou Gehrig left in the first with a severe case of lumbago, the most serious threat to his consective-games played streak. He returned for one at bat the next day.
1971 – Oakland’s Reggie Jackson hits a mammoth home run off the power generator on the right-field roof at Tiger Stadium to highlight a barrage of six homers — three by each team — as the AL beats the NL 6-4 in the All-Star game. Jackson’s home run comes off Pittsburgh’s Dock Ellis. The Pirates’ Roberto Clemente homers for the National League.
1972 – Robert Irsay buys the stock of the Los Angeles Rams for $19 million and swaps the franchise for the Baltimore Colts. The players and coaches are not affected.
2005 – The Frontier League All-Star Game is played in Washington for the first time. The Wild Things’ Mike Arbinger wins the pregame Home Run Derby and is named the game’s MVP after hitting a home run and scoring twice in the East’s 5-4 win before a crowd of 3,595.
