Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager replaced Toronto outfielder George Springer on the roster for next week’s All-Star Game.

The Rangers said Seager was an injury replacement for Springer. However, Springer was in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Thursday night’s game against Kansas City.

Springer has been bothered by a sore right elbow since late June. He left a June 21 game against the White Sox and sat out the next three games, returning June 26 against Milwaukee.

“Our team comes first,” Springer said. “This is something I’ve been managing for a while. It’s four or five days of extremely valuable time to let this thing rest and get ready to go for the second half.”

Seager became a three-time All-Star following selections in 2016 and ’17 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seager entered Thursday with a .245 average, 21 homers and 48 RBIs.

He signed a $325 million, 10-year contract with the Rangers during the offseason that included a $100,000 bonus for All-Star selection.

National League

Colorado 8, San Diego 5: Randal Grichuk doubled twice and drove in three runs, C.J. Cron had two hits in his return to the starting lineup, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 8-5 on Thursday.

Cron, the Rockies’ lone All-Star selection, missed three of the last five games with a wrist injury suffered Friday night at Arizona. He had a pinch-hit single Wednesday night.

The Rockies took three of four from San Diego and have won 13 of 16 against the Padres at Coors Field since the start of last season.

American League

Cleveland 4, Detroit 0: Triston McKenzie struck out a career-high 12 and extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.

McKenzie (7-6) pitched eight dominant innings, giving up five singles, walking none and working out of his only trouble in the sixth.

With runners at first and third, McKenzie struck out Eric Haase for the third out. The lanky right-hander celebrated by pounding his hand into his glove as he walked back to Cleveland’s dugout.

Josh Naylor homered in the first off rookie Elvin Rodríguez (0-3), who made his first start for the Tigers since June 10. All-Star Andrés Giménez added a solo shot in the eighth inning for Cleveland.

Yankees bring back Wade: The New York Yankees reacquired utility player Tyler Wade from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday for a player to be named or cash.

The speedy Wade was assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 27-year-old hit .218 with 22 runs, five doubles, a homer and eight RBIs in 67 games with the Angels this season before being designated for assignment on July 3. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on July 8.

Rays’ Baz to IL: Tampa Bay placed starter Shane Baz on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right elbow sprain, leaving the Rays with 17 players on the IL.

Their list, which ties the Cincinnati Reds for the most in the major leagues, includes 12 pitchers.

Despite all the injury woes, Rays hold the first AL wild card spot.

Baz felt discomfort playing catch Tuesday and will be shut down for at least four weeks.

The right-hander, 1-2 with a 5.00 ERA in six starts this season, had surgery on his right elbow in March and didn’t make his season debut until mid-June.
