1941 – Sugar Ray Robinson wins a decision over Sammy Angott of Washington in a non-title boxing match before 15,000 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.
1974 – Richie Hebner hits two home runs and two ground-rule doubles to back the five-hit pitching of Dock Ellis as the Pittsburgh Pirates win their eighth straight game, 6-2, over the host Atlanta Braves.
1980 – Dave Cook is hired as head wrestling coach at Canon-McMillan. Cook spent the past two seasons as head coach at Chartiers-Houston. Cook takes over for Ron Junko, who had held the job since 1975.
1985 – Title IX, a law meant to end sex discrimination in the nation’s schools, goes into effect. Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in admissions, financial aid, employment and athletics.
1990 – Brendan Folmar of California throws a 17-yard touchdown pass to Julius Dawkins of Monessen in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Gladiators a 30-23 victory over the host Washington Commandos in an Arena Football League game. The win clinches a playoff berth for the Gladiators.
2007 – The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Paul Waner’s uniform No. 11.
