1949 – Philadelphia’s Andy Seminick, a catcher from Muse, hits three home runs and drives in five as the Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-3 at Shibe Park.
1976 – Behind the one-hit pitching of Scott Stephens, Washington defeats Gateway 3-1 in eight innings in the WPIAL baseball quarterfinals. Stephens drives in the tying run in the seventh inning, and Bob Kazarick’s double scores Jack Schultz with the go-ahead run in the eighth.
1983 – Steve Tatar goes 3-for-4 with three RBI and earns a save in relief of starter Brian Zanardelli as California defeats Leechburg 6-4 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball championship game at Pullman Park in Butler.
1986 – The Pittsburgh Pirates select Arkansas junior third baseman Jeff King with the first pick in baseball’s amateur draft.
1986 – Beth-Center High School graduate Drew Witouski goes 4-for-5 to help Marietta College come from behind and defeat Ithaca 11-6 in the NCAA Division III baseball championship game.
1988 – Chartiers-Houston scores two runs on a throwing error in the sixth inning to break a tie and goes on to a 4-2 victory over Sto-Rox in the WPIAL Class AA softball championship game. It’s the second consecutive WPIAL title for the Bucs.
1991 – Lon Hinkle shoots even-par 72 in the final round to win the $200,000 Ben Hogan Quicksilver Open by two strokes. It’s Hinkle’s first tournament win since the 1979 World Series of Golf.
1998 – Nikki Gasti pitches a two-hitter and strikes out 15 as Carmichaels defeats Tyrone, 5-0, in the PIAA Class A softball playoffs at California University. Gasti improves her career record to 55-2.
2003 – Peters Township scores three runs in the third inning and takes advantage of seven Meadville errors to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-2, in the first round of the PIAA baseball playoffs at Jerry Uht Park in Erie. The win is PT’s first state playoff victory in school history.
2003 – Dan Novak hits a grand slam and Chartiers-Houston overcomes an early two-run deficit to beat District 9 champion Clarion-Limestone, 8-2, in the first round of the PIAA baseball playoffs.
2003 – Jen Alderson pitches a five-hitter and smacks a tiebreaking triple as Chartiers-Houston defeated Smethport, 6-1, in the first round of the PIAA softball playoffs.
2008 – Pittsburgh outlasts Detroit 4-3 in three overtimes of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals. Petr Sykora scores at 9:57 of the third overtime ending the fifth-longest finals game in NHL history.
