1966 – The Southwest Conference, which has recently converted from a Class A league to Class B, adds Bentleyville-Ellsworth, Peters Township and West Greene as new members. It also accepts the withdrawl of Fort Cherry as a member. The conference tentatively accepts and both Avella and South Fayette as members, pending their formal applications.
1970 – Washington & Jefferson’s Scott Herz is named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball MVP. Herz led the conference in rebounding (16.1 per game) and was third in scoring (19.5).
1973 – Canon-McMillan’s George O’Korn pins Rick Peiffer of Upper Dauhpin 28 seconds into the third period to win the 167-pound title at the PIAA Wrestling Championships. It’s O’Korn’s second state title.
1980 – Guy Montecalvo is hired as Washington High School’s head football coach.
1984 – Chartiers-Houston’s Patsy Vulcano wins the PIAA Class AAA 132-pound title by beating Mike Balestrini of Shikellamy, 7-4.
1990 – Cary Kolat of Jefferson-Morgan wins his second PIAA Class AA wrestling title, pinning Jim Meckley of Line Mountain in 1:38 in the 125-pound final. Kolat wins all of his bouts in the tournament by either pin or technical fall.
1990 – Yancey Taylor scores a game-high 26 points and goes 15-for-15 at the free-throw line as Ringgold defeats Hollidaysburg 79-61 in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA boys basketball playoffs at Norwin High School.
1992 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade pitcher John Smiley to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for pitcher Denny Neagle and outfielder Midre Cummings.
1998 – Right winger Bill Hinton scores three goals and Peters Township defeats Kittanning 5-1 in a state hockey quarterfinal game at the Iceoplex in Canonsburg.
2001 – Edinboro University’s Josh Koscheck, a Waynesburg graduate, decisions Army’s Maurice Worthy, 8-1, in the finals to win the 174-pound weight class at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at the University of Iowa.
2010 – A 23-point, 13-rebound performance by junior Mike Lamberti powers South Fayette to a 56-41 victory over Washington in a PIAA Class AA second-round playoff game at Chartiers Valley.

Riley Dunn fired her third 300 of the season to lead Frazier-Simplex to the high team score of the week with 1483. Riley is the high individual, high woman and high junior, and Murrysville’s Ray Harvey is the high senior with 298, just a point ahead of Tom Gerner’s 297.
