1957 – Ron Silbaugh, a 120-pounder from Jefferson-Morgan, and Robert Marshall, a 145-pounder from Burgettstown, win championships at the PIAA wrestling tournament held at Penn State. Silbaugh wins a 4-3 decision over Tony Scordo of Tyrone in the finals and Marshall is a 6-3 winner over Gregory Ruth of Bethlehem.
2001 – California University announces it will play all home baseball games at a ballpark in North Franklin Township that is scheduled to open in the spring of 2002.
2002 – Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson becomes the first undefeated four-time NCAA wrestling champion at the NCAA Championships. Sanderson beats Lehigh’s Jon Trenge, 12-4, to win at 197 pounds and finish his career with a perfect 159-0 record.
2003 – Jaron Brown scores 20 points and Brandin Knight follows with 17 as Pitt trounces Indiana, 74-52, in Boston to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
2004 – Chris Clackson has three goals and three assists, and Gerry Raymond also has a hat trick, as Peters Township beats Kittanning, 8-1, in the Penguin Cup semifinals at Mellon Arena.
2010 – Joe Mottiqua’s second goal of the game, coming with 2:52 remaining in overtime, gives No. 8 seed Canon-McMillan a 6-5 victory over top-seeded Shaler in the PIHL Class AAA playoffs at Mellon Arena. Big Macs goaltender Brandon Smolarek makes 37 saves.
2012 – Ron Everhart, who coached the Duquesne men’s basketball team to a 99-89 record in six seasons and one Atlantic 10 tournament final, is fired by the school.
