1953 – Monongahela High School football and baseball coach Ben K. Haldy resigns to become football coach at Vandergrift.

1956 – Former Trinity and Chartiers High School wrestler Ed DeWitt, wrestling for Pitt, defeats defending national champion Fred Davis of Oklahoma A&M to win the 167-pound title at the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla.

1961 – Terry Holder scores a game-high 20 points and Rich Hallam adds 15 as Fort Cherry, in existence less than two years, defeats St. Clair 51-41 in the PIAA Class B championship game before nearly 4,000 fans at the Pitt Field House. Fort Cherry, under head coach Ed Hepe, holds St. Clair to 15 second-half points and becomes the first school from Washington County to win a state basketball title.

1966 – Clayton Ketterling, head wrestling coach at Waynesburg College, is named athletic director, suceeding Mo Scarry.

1973 – Ulice Payne scores 18 points, and Joe Montana and Scott Nedrow have 16 each, as Ringgold defeats Chester 74-65 in the third-place game of the PIAA Class A basketball tournament at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg.

1979 – Trinity’s Elaine Sobansky sets a national indoor high school record for girls with a shot put throw of 47-8 1/2 in the Pitt High School Invitational at Fitzgerald Field House.

1984 – Mark Wise scores 11 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to help Washington blow open a one-point game and defeat Iroquois 61-49 in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals at Westminster College.

1987 – Pittsburgh is granted one of four franchises in the new Arena Football League.

1992 – Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux becomes the 36th player in NHL history with 1,000 points, getting an assist in the second period of the Penguins’ 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

1998 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade goaltender Patrick Lalime to Anaheim in exchange for center Shawn Pronger.

2010 – Mike Lamberti scores 25 points as South Fayette defeats Mercyhurst Prep 54-41 in the PIAA Class AA semifinals at Meadville High School.
