High school baseball
Drake Long and Chris Barrish played double or nothing as Carmichaels rolled to a 13-2 season-opening victory Friday at Brownsville.
Carmichaels hit six doubles, three of them by Long and two by Barrish. Long went 3-for-4 with four runs, an RBI and also was the winning pitcher. He worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out seven.
Barrish went 2-for-2 2with two runs and two RBI, and Nick Rico had two hits and three RBI. Trenton Carter doubled and singled to with with a game-high four RBI.
n Winning pitcher Kaden Woods and reliever Ben Shields combined on a two-hit shutout as Charleroi defeated Frazier, 3-0.
The Cougars scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and that was more than enough support for Woods, who allowed one hit over five innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
Shields pitched the final two innings for a save, striking out three.
n Winning pitcher Sam Miller went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, double and seven RBI as Peters Township pounded Brashear 16-1 in four innings at Peterswood Park.
The Indians had 14 hits, including a triple by Jack Kail and a double by Joey Bedillion. Kail had two hits, scored three times and drove in two runs.
n Steel Valley used a pair of five-run innings to defeat visiting Washington 14-4 in five innings.
Wash High, which trailed by only 5-4 in the fourth inning, received a triple from Michael Shallcross.
n Anthony McGovern and Ty Keefer combined on a three-hit shutout as Southmoreland won at Monessen, 11-0.
Jack Sacco’s double was one of three hits for Monessen. Govern, who struck out eight in three innings, had a triple. Kory Ansell doubled for the Scotties.
n C.J. Leuch fired a one-hitter with nine strikeouts over six innings as North Hills defeated Burgettstown, 8-0.
North Hills scored in only two innings, a three-run third and five-run fourth.
A.J. Kuzior had a double for Burgettstown. North Hills’ Dylan Barnes went 4-for-4 with two runs, a triple and a double.
High school softball
Liz Sherman drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Burgettstown a 5-4 victory over Upper St. Clair in a season-opening game Friday in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Burgettstown led 4-1 after four innings before USC scored three times in the sixth to tie.
Winning pitcher Julia Jastrzebski had a big game as she tossed a seven-hitter and struck out 12. She did not walk a batter and helped the Blue Devils at the plate by hitting a double.
Aubrey Krivak tripled and drove in a run, and Sherman and Gracyn Murray each drove in two runs.
Sophia Pries homered and tripled for USC.
n Charleroi split a pair of games, beating Thomas Jefferson 16-1 in five innings and losing 4-3 to Yough.
The Cougars unleashed a 15-hit attack against TJ in a five-inning game.
Eight of the nine Cougars starters had at least one hit and Charleroi belted six extra-base hits, including triples by McKenna DeUnger and Elia Sypolt. Sofia Celaschi had a doubles and two singles, and Riley Jones, Madalynn Lancy and winning pitcher Emma Stefancik each smacked a double.
Stefancik scattered six hits and struck out eight. She walked only one.
Yough’s Adoria Walker hit a two-run walkoff homer to beat Charleroi.
The Cougars’ Avery Pendo went 3-for-4 with a home run and double. Jones had another double.
n Ringgold had 11 hits – 10 singles – and defeated California 15-4 in five innings.
Winning pitcher Dani Vecchio went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Karlie Russell had a double, the game’s only extra-base hit. Vecchio struck out seven.
n Allie Miller fired a three-inning no-hitter and struck out eight as Carmichaels blanked Monessen 15-0 in a three-inning game.
Miller issued only one walk.
Carmichaels had 10 hits, including a double by Ali Jacobs, who had three RBI and scored three runs. Grace Brown went 2-for-2 and scored three times.
n Chartiers-Houston scored the game’s first four runs and defeated South Allegheny 4-2 at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Leadoff Bella Hess was a catalyst for the Bucs as she went 3-for-4, scored two runs and stole two bases.
Hanna Richey and Ella Richey each drove in two runs.
Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out eight while tossing a five-hitter.
n West Greene dropped its season opener 9-1 to Class 6A Souderton at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Katie Lampe went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base for the Pioneers.
Abby Burns was the winning pitcher, striking out 10.
n South Fayette split a pair of games at the KSA Events in Orlando, Fla. The Lions lost a morning game to Chippewa 11-1 before bouncing back for a 12-2 win over Masters Academy.
In college basketball
UMass has found a new leader for its basketball program, hiring Frank Martin as its coach Friday.
Martin, 56, takes over the Minutemen program from Matt McCall, who was fired this month after going 58-81 over five seasons in Amherst.
Martin arrives following his own dismissal from South Carolina last week after 10 seasons and just one NCAA appearance with the Gamecocks.
In tennis
Women’s tennis has a new name atop its rankings, a 20-year-old who – now that Ashleigh Barty has retired and asked to vacate her No. 1 spot on the world list – becomes the first Polish player to hold that distinction. Iga Swiatek ascension was clinched Friday with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in the second round of the Miami Open.
