1962 – Coach Joe Rodjom’s Washington High School baseball team assures itself of at least a share of the Section 3 title by defeating Avella 6-1. Winning pitcher Larry Rettinger tosses a one-hitter, allowing only a fourth-inning double by Ed Cruny.

1969 – The plans for the NFL-AFL merger are completed. The NFL will consist of two conferences, the AFC and NFC, of 13 teams. The NFL will move three franchises, Baltimore, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, to the AFC.

1985 – Back-to-back home runs by Andy McIlvaine and Jim Griffin send Washington to a 6-3 victory over Fort Cherry and the section baseball championship.

2001 – The XFL folds after one season. The football league, founded by the World Wrestling Federation and jointly owned by NBC, was a TV ratings disappointment.
