Mitch Garvin hit a home run and two Riverside pitchers stymied Carmichaels’ offense as the Panthers pulled out a 3-2 win in a Class 2A quarterfinal baseball game Thursday at Norwin High School.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Peterswood Park but was switched Thursday morning.
The season ends for fourth-seeded Carmichaels (15-2). Both of the Mikes’ losses were by one run.
Fifth-seeded Riverside (15-5) advances because the Panthers scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings then held off a late comeback attempt by the Mikes.
Carmichaels took a 1-0 lead in the first when an error allowed Drake Long to score. Riverside tied it at 1-1 when Garvin led off the second inning with a home run.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead on a two-out RBI single by Bo Fornataro, and made it 3-1 when an error allowed a run to score in the fourth.
Carmichaels made it a one-run game in the sixth when Trenton Carter scored on Dylan Rohrer’s sacrifice fly. The Mikes left the potential tying run at third base in the sixth and couldn’t take advantage of a one-out walk in the seventh. Carmichaels left eight runners on base.
Winning pitcher Ronnie Harper threw 5 2/3 innings. Carmichaels pitchers Carter and Long combined to issue eight walks and hit two batters.
Long was 3-for-4 and Chris Barrish had two hits for the Mikes.
Softball
Deer Lakes 3, Waynesburg 2: Maddie Kee twirled a four-hitter and Tia Germanich broke a fourth-inning tie by scoring on an infield grounder as Deer Lakes edged Waynesburg 3-2 in a Class 3A quarterfinal at West Mifflin.
Kee struck out eight and held Waynesburg (13-5) scoreless after the Raiders pushed across two runs in the first inning. Kayla Lemley had an RBI double and Hannah Wood followed with a run-scoring single to put Waynesburg up 2-0.
Deer Lakes (12-4) scored one run in the second and two in the fourth. Lydia Guthrie had two RBI for the Lancers.
Jefferson-Morgan-Union ppd: Jefferson-Morgan’s Class A quarterfinal game against Union was postponed becaus eo rain and rescheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Montour.
