1953 – Ron Novak’s two-out single drives in two runs in the top of the 12th inning and gives California a 4-2 victory over Brownsville in the WPIAL baseball playoffs. Winning pitcher Wayne Campbell throws a three-hit complete game and strikes out 12.
1956 – A two-out double by Fran Celaschi scores two runs and gives Charleroi a 2-1 victory over Brownsville in a WPIAL baseball playoff game played in Fayette City. Lefty Carl Whitmyer holds Brownsville to two hits and strikes out 13.
1957 – The National League approves the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants for a proposed shift to Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively.
1972 – Waynesburg’s Chuck Baker wins the PIAA Class B pole vault championship by clearing 13-6.
1974 – Pittsburgh left-hander Ken Brett comes within three outs of pitching the National League’s first perfect game in nine years before settling for a two-hit 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a doubleheader at Three Rivers Stadium. In the second game, Brett delievers a pinch-hit triple to give the Pirates an 8-7 win.
1974 – The New York Rangers trade captain Vic Hadfield to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Nick Beverly.
1983 – Despite three unimpressive seasons as their coach, Eddie Johnston is hired as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
1983 – Washington’s Brian Davis wins the PIAA Class AAA long jump title with a leap of 22-7 1/2 at Shippensburg.
1983 – Brian Zanardelli pitches a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as California defeats Bentworth 4-0 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball quarterfinals at Charleroi.
1991 – Doug Drabek pitches his second career one-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the host St. Louis Cardinals, 8-0.
1997 – Scott Belcastro and Brad Auld combine on a two-hitter as Washington edges previously undefeated Riverside 4-3 in the WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinals. The Little Prexies score two runs in the seventh inning to take the lead.
1999 – Trinity scores two runs in the top of the 11th inning and Sara Yeager pitches a six-hitter as the Hillers defeat Woodland Hills 3-1 in a WPIAL playoff softball game in Monessen.
