1951 – West Bethlehem High School wins its third consecutive Washington-Greene Class C Conference football championship by defeating Midway 32-13 in the regular-season finale. Bernie Kamenski scored West Beth’s final four touchdowns on runs of five, 55 and five yards and a 40-yard pass play.

1956 – Harry Ellsworth scores on touchdown runs of three, 23 and 17 yards as Cumberland Township defeats host California 35-12. The win, combined with Scott Township’s 28-20 upset of Carnegie, advances the Mikes to the WPIAL Class A championship game.

1968 – The Waynesburg College football team sets 18 school and five national records in a 69-0 victory over Lock Haven. Waynesburg quarterback John Huntey completes 28 of 39 passes for 467 yards and eight touchdowns. Wide receiver Don Herrmann catches 18 passes for 328 yards and seven TDs covering 10, 67, 12, 9, 2, 16 and 48 yards.

1983 – Jon Ault scores a pair of goals and Trinity dominates Erie McDowell 4-0 in the first round of the PIAA soccer playoffs at Shaler High School.

1990 – Terry Vaughn’s one-yard touchdown run in the final minute and Todd Fleissner’s two-point conversion gives Washington a 16-15 come-from-behind win over Freedom in the WPIAL Class AA quarterfinals.

1996 – Washington & Jefferson scores on every possession in the first half and cruises to a 63-13 victory over host Alfred to win its 11th consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference football championship.

2002 – Bobby Hathaway runs for 193 yards and three touchdowns as undefeated Carmichaels beats Fort Cherry 32-0 in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at Thomas Jefferson.

2011 – Joe Paterno is fired by the Penn State board of trustees despite saying he would retire as coach after the football season ended. Paterno is brought down by the growing furor over the handling of child sex abuse allegations against assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Penn State President Graham Spanier is also ousted.
