1914 – Johnny Spiegel runs for two touchdowns and Fred Heyward catches a pass from Russell Goodwin for another score as Washington & Jefferson defeats Rutgers 20-13 at the Polo Grounds in New York.
1953 – Donora and Har-Brack play to a scoreless tie in the WPIAL Class AA football championship game. Both teams had scoring opportunities. Donora is stopped twice inside the Har-Brack 10-yard line. Then, in the waning minutes, Har-Brack’s Cookie Gilchrist has his 29-yard field-goal attempt fall short.
1955 – The Los Angeles Rams select West Virginia running back Joe Marconi with the sixth pick in the first round of the NFL draft. A Fredericktown native and graduate of Bethlehem Joint High School, Marconi rushed for 998 yards (5.5 yards per carry) and scored 18 touchdowns while helping the Mountaineers to a 31-7 record during his four seasons in Morgantown.
1980 – Rick Trocano runs for one touchdown and passes for another, and Carlton Williamson makes a game-clinching interception of a Todd Blackledge pass, as Pitt edges Penn State 14-9 at Beaver Stadium.
1984 – Mike Doyle makes a 15-foot jump shot with one second remaining in the fourth overtime to give Philadelphia Textile a 91-89 victory over California State at Hamer Hall. Michael Wilson scores 29 points for Cal.
1987 – Darrin Walls scores 24 points and Vance Walker follows with 20 as Waynesburg rallies for a 99-92 victory over California in the championship game of the Observer-Reporter Invitational at Hamer Hall.
