1912 – The football teams of Washington & Jefferson and Carlisle Indian School battle to a 0-0 tie before a crowd of almost 10,000 at College Field. Carlisle, which will finish the season with a 12-1-1 record, loses a fumble at the W&J one-yard line early in the game, turns the ball over on downs at the Presidents’ one and the Indians’ Jim Thorpe, who months earlier won both the Olympic decathlon and pentathlon at the Stockholm Games, misses three field goals in the fourth quarter.
1967 – Boston’s Jim Longborg flirts with a perfect game and settles for a one-hitter, and Carl Yastrzemski hits two home runs as the Boston Red Sox even the world series with a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 2 at Fenway Park. The only hit by St. Louis is an eighth-inning double by Julian Javier.
1973 – Bill Blose scores on a four-yard run, following a fumble recovery by Paul Sendro, and Trinity High School ends a 13-game losing streak with an 8-0 win over Montour in a Western Conference game.
1979 – Bert Blyleven strikes out nine and throws a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates sweep the Cincinnati Reds with a 7-1 victory in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series.
1984 – Bentworth’s defense forces five turnovers and overcomes 161 rushing yards by California’s Mike Kanalis as the visiting Bearcats improve their record to 6-0 with a 15-6 victory.
1985 – A.J. Pagano runs for two scores and Ted Bell kicks two field goals as undefeated Washington & Jefferson defeats Case Western Reserve, 20-13, ending the Spartans’ 14-game winning streak. CWR commits 10 turnovers (five interceptions, five lost fumbles).
1990 – Brian Miller rushes for 128 yards and one touchdown as Ringgold defeats Trinity, 16-7, in a Quad West Conference game.
1990 – Kevin Stevens scores two goals, including the game-winner with 7:15 left, and added four assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Washington Capitals 7-4 in the season opener.
2001 – Washington, the top-ranked Class AA team in the state, rolls over visiting Waynesburg, 47-0, as quarterback Justin Gregula connects with wide receiver Brian Skaggs for three touchdowns.
2001 – Barry Bonds sets a record for home runs in a single season, hitting Nos. 71 and 72, but San Francisco is eliminated from playoff contention in an 11-10 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
2012 – Peters Township’s Sara Komer and Abby Cummings win the WPIAL Class AAA girls doubles tennis championship by defeating top-seeded Megan Wasson and Nicole Cylerski of Oakland Catholic in the finals.
