1943 – Sammy Angott of Washington regains the NBA lightweight world boxing championship by winning a 15-round decision over Luther “Slugger” White in Hollywood, Calif. The fight is the first outdoor show held after dark in almost two years because of blackout restrictions following Pearl Harbor.
1951 – Mike Stefanic scores two touchdowns and undefeated Jefferson High School holds host Masontown scoreless in the second half for a 26-12 victory. The win is the 14th straight for the Jeffs.
1971 – Led by Rich Chambers’ eighth-place finish, McGuffey High School wins the Class B team title at the WPIAL Cross Country Championships at South Park.
1972 – Jim Day returns the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and Paul Reihner races 83 yards with an intercepted lateral for a score, as Washington wins the Century Conference championship with a 42-29 victory over West Mifflin.
1975 – KDKA, the flagship radio station for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Iron City Beer, the club’s main sponsor, announce they have fired Bob Prince and Nellie King as the team’s broadcasters.
1984 – Pat Randolph scores on a 22-yard run and Larry Holley intercepts a Penn State pass in the final minute as West Virginia defeats the Nittany Lions 17-14 at Mountaineer Field. It’s WVU’s first win over Penn State in 28 years.
1989 – Eric Mosier rushes for 148 yards and three touchdowns as Jefferson-Morgan defeats Monessen 41-14 and wins the Tri-County South Conference championship.
1989 – Jim Fields scores the game’s only touchdown on an 8-yard run only six seconds into the fourth quarter and Washington defeats visiting Charleroi 6-0 to win the Century Conference title.
1989 – Mapletown’s Derek Bochna, though slowed by a hamstring injury, sets the WPIAL rushing record in the Maples’ 17-0 win over California. Bochna gains 56 yards on 13 carries to give him 4,615 yards.
2001 – Joe Paterno wins his 324th game to pass Bear Bryant for the most victories by a Division I-A football coach when Penn State rallies for a 29-27 win over Ohio State.
2003 – Rob Milani scores during a shootout to give Peters Township a 1-0 victory over Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL Class AAA boys soccer semifinals at Elizabeth Forward High School.
2006 – Troy Garove of Trinity rushes for 270 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries as the Hillers clinch a WPIAL Class AAA playoff berth with a 28-21 victory over Peters Township. It’s Garove’s school-record fourth 200-yard game.
2007 – Washington & Jefferson scores three touchdowns and a safety in the second half to rally for a 22-21 victory over Waynesburg in a battle of undefeated Presidents’ Athletic Conference teams. Waynesburg’s Robert Heller rushes for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
2012 – Trinity locks up a WPIAL playoff berth by defeating host Ringgold 31-30 in double overtime. The Hillers win the game by stopping a two-point conversion run in the second OT. The game is played on a Saturday afternoon, one day after a water line break caused a postponement.
2012 – Christian Jackson catches three touchdown passes from Carter Hill as Waynesburg defeats Westminster 42-16 to improve the Yellow Jackets’ record to 9-0.
