1938 – Pittsburgh’s Lloyd and Paul Waner hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning against Brooklyn at the Polo Grounds to become the first brothers to accomplish the feat in a major league game.
1948 – Lee Sala of Donora, a middleweight boxer, knocks out Charley Affif in the second round before 11,863 at Forbes Field. Sala improves his record to 41-0.
1963 – All three Alou brothers – Felipe, Matty and Jesus – played in the outfield at the same time for the San Francisco Giants in a 13-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
1972 – George O’Korn passes for two touchdowns and runs for two scores as Canon-McMillan improves its record to 2-0 with a 26-12 victory at Uniontown.
1977 – The Baltimore Orioles trail 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when manager Earl Weaver asks umpire Marty Springstead to have a tarpaulin that is covering the Toronto bullpen removed. The game is played in a light rain and Weaver says that the tarpaulin poses an injury risk to his left fielder. The umpire refuses and Weaver pulls his team from the field. Springstead waits 15 minutes for the Orioles to retake the field before declaring the game a forfeit win for the Blue Jays.
1978 – Muhammad Ali pounds out a one-sided decision in the Superdome and at age 36 becomes the first person to win the world heavyweight boxing championship three times by defeating Leon Spinks.
1978 – A 40-yard touchdown pass from Bruce Barnhart to Warren Vresack gives undefeated california a 6-0 win over visiting Frazier.
1990 – After stopping Hampton on fourth-and-goal, McGuffey drives 98 yards in 17 running plays, scoring on Eric Guy’s one-yard plunge, for a 15-9 victory.
2017 – Mapletown’s Dylan Rush sets the WPIAL single-game rushing record by gaining 524 yards on 39 carries and scoring seven touchdowns in the Maples’ 48-32 victory at Avella. Rush scored on runs of 10, 55, 70, 72, 42, 64 and 11 yards.
