1939 – Waynesburg College and Fordham play on Randall’s Island, N.Y., in the first televised college football game. Fordham wins, 34-7, but Waynesburg’s Bobby Brooks scores the game’s first touchdown on a 63-yard run.
1960 – Washington overcomes a 12-point third-quarter deficit and rallies to beat Uniontown 27-26 in the Western Conference football opener. Jim White runs for four TDs for Wash High and Jerry Sandusky kicks the game-winning extra point.
1972 – Pittsbrugh’s Roberto Clemente gets his 3,000th and final career hit, a double to left centerfield off the New York Mets’ Jon Matlack.
1977 – John Candelaria becomes the first Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher since Vernon Law in 1960 to win 20 games. Candelaria pitches a seven-hitter and does not issue a walk in the Pirates’ 3-1 win at Wrigley Field.
1978 – Washington & Jefferson moves into a tie for first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference by defeating John Carroll, 10-9. The Presidents score the winning points when freshman quarterback Dom Papalia crosses the goal line on a one-yard sneak with five seconds remaining and freshman Pete Soom kicks the extra point.
1982 – Waynesburg native Bill George, 52, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who played 15 years for the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams, is killed in a three-vehicle crash near Davis Junction, Ill. A 1947 graduate of Waynesburg High School, George won the state heavyweight wrestling title in 1946 and 1947.
1983 – The largest professional sports trade in history is finalized as the United States Football League’s Chicago Blitz trade all of their coaches and players to Arizona in exchange for the Wranglers’ coaching staff and all but two of their players.
1986 – The reorganization at The Meadows continues as Terry Bove resigns as general manager.
1989 – A 42-yard field goal on the game’s last play caps a 22-point rally for Pitt and enables the Panthers to tie West Virginia, 31-31, before a record crowd of 68,938 at Mountaineer Field. Ed Frazier kicks the field goal and the Mountaineers were undone after leading, 31-9, at the end of the third quarter.
1990 – Doug Drabek pitches a three-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat St. Louis, 2-0, and clinch the National League East Division title. It’s the Pirates’ first division championship in 11 years.
1994 – Quarterback Ken Carl scores his second touchdown of the game, with 11:17 remaining, to give Avella a 14-7 victory over Chartiers-Houston and improve the Eagles’ record to 5-0. Carl rushes for 126 yards and passes for 117.
1999 – The Pittsburgh Penguins trade defenseman Kevin Hatcher to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Peter Popovic.
1999 – West Virginia University announces it will play all of its home basketball game during the 1999-2000 season at neutral sites while the school resolves potential problems with asbestos at the WVU Coliseum. Six of the 18 home games will be played at the Wheeling Civic Center.
